I just picked up my bike. The manual print 2 version 1199s and 1199s w/ ABS. How do I know which 1199s is with ABS or not?

Thanks in advance

Switch it on and look at the dash. If there is an abs setting at the bottom it's abs, if not then it isn't. Alternatively take it on a dirt road, slam on the brakes and see what happens :)

Wait.....you bought a bike and you don't know if it has ABS or not??

How do you do that?

look down behind the fairing between the tank and the exhaust and see if there's a cover saying ABS on it...

Look at the front wheel if there is a roster-like ring near the axle, thats part of the abs system.

Non abs has the ring on the front wheel too. Its used as part of the traction control input too.

Best way is to look for the pump behind the right side fairing. You'll see the high pressure lines running to it. The pump is mounted directly above the vapor cannister.

Also, I think that one of the digits in the serial number represent ABS and non-ABS. Thought I read that somewhere.

Yeah, whats up with that, Dealer could not tell you?
There's a $1000.00 premium for the ABS if i'm not mistaken.

How does that happen?

You buy a bike asking for the base and you pay base msrp, get it home, and then you start to wonder if your bike has abs standard or not. Lots of people buy cars and have no idea their car has abs (almost always included at no extra charge) so my response would be if you didn't ask for it on the 1199 (and the dealership is most honest), you probably don't have it. I don't think bikes are being sold as non-abs versions, are they? You have bikes and you have bikes with abs and if there's no discussion about the different models, how would the ordinary consumer know?

Maybe it's just me... but i thoroughly research what ever i'm usually buying, I like to know what I'm paying for.
I also purchased a base model and had the dealership explained everything that the bike came with and with out, compared to the S and the Tri models
Again..that's just me.

I agree with you this is the type of bike you do the indepth research and cover everything before you buy. But i can see someone walking into the dealership and saying i want the 1199 but i cant afford anything extra, i just want the base bike and its great as is without all the frills. After the purchase you start to learn about all the expensive options you forgo'd but no biggie you can live without. To be honest i had no idea motorcycles had abs but im the type of person to buy up not because of need but want...so i got it.

Considering ABS is really the ONLY option on these bikes besides base, S, and Tri, it is shocking that someone would not know if they have it or not.

also if you have led front lights you have abs

not. but i bet 10 - 20 % of the s and tri owners do not know either they have leds or the base models do not. does it really matter that much? i personally have no idea what is missing on the base model, i never considered buying it.

if i were the "regular" buyer, i would think abs is standard on all three high-end bikes, not even an option....until i saw the manual. in my mind, it's not even premium for $1,000, it's a silly extra that should be standard on all models....for free. if you don't want it, turn it off. (i understand the extra weight tho). all it does is cause confusion and hinder the sales/inventory/ordering/repair/etc process. eventually the [2013] model "drops" this.

i bet my lexus doesn't have an "option" to drive a car with no abs on it. basically what ducati is saying is all 1199s have abs and at this point, you can take it off of the bike for a $1,000 discount.

imho

The S has led lights and may or may not have ABS so the statement above is incorrect. Also some assumptions have been made that everyone that buys a 1199 does their home work. This is the type of bike that some will buy just because it is the latest just my ho.

Wow didnt realize this is my first post what a tool i am lol

Turn on the bike... Start the bike... The ABS light comes on!
No ABS light on the dash means you don't have ABS.
