Ear Plugs: to use or not to use on the street?

I always use plugs. Primarily a custom fit pair as foamies don't seal well in my left ear. It definitely helps with fatigue, and my ears aren't ringing when I'm done riding.

I think a good helmet is better than plugs for the street, you can hear your tunes, talk to buddies at intersections, and hear traffic/emer vehicles. :)

I cannot disagree more. I have a Shoei Qwest which is considered a very quiet helmet, but it in no way keeps out enough wind noise to be as effective as it needs to be. With ear plugs you can still hear effectively - no doubt you may not be able to have a conversation at a traffic light and the bikes running, but it's a small price to pay for not loosing your hearing or developing bad tinnitus (which I have).

Like I said in my post above, I did ride for many years without them. You'll realize how much you need them if you ride for several weeks with them in the entire ride, then do a ride without them. You will realize then how much of a difference it makes. I seriously regret that I fought it all those years.

Good information guys. I was on a carrier for 4 years (USS Saratoga CV-60) and wore double hearing protection then, but still have some loss. Think I'll put a box of foamies in the garage & start wearing them again...

i use ultimate ears custom headphones. they make a seal and can be used as earplugs or as headphones. i use them as headphones. you dont need the music on loud at all cause the fit is so good. they also make just earplugs if you want. best purchase i have ever made in the way of headphones

Yes, always use some form of plugs though I mainly use them to reduce wind noise, as that is louder to me than the bike.

Yup same...I wear earplugs on the road or when I do trackdays. Its the wind noise I'm avoiding...I wear top of the line shoei X12...but I still wear earplugs no matter what I ride.

Same thing as driving the car with the windows rolled up and listening to music, you can still hear the exterior noise like car horns etc...but at a much lower level.

while the bike makes some noise at lower speeds, it's usually the wind noise at 70 mph with a good flowing helmet, I can't hear the engine at that speed over the sound of the air going through the helmet. I've always worn ear protection, simple ear foamies.

I use a set of Bose in the ear headphones. Sound great, don't have to have them full blast and I can still hear traffic.

Ok, fine. I'll give them a try! :)

Always and always have done, for me it makes me lose concentration. In the UK it seems to be second nature, all my friends wear them

Yeah, its to stop the rain getting in lol:D. I"ve only been using plugs about 4years since I started riding with a different crew. Can"t imagine not using them now and amazed how I got by beforehand. Its night and day the difference and just enhances the riding experience.;)

I also use earplugs. Definitely the best choice I ever made after 20 years of riding without them. Stupid I did not get them earlier.

Started racing in the 80s and have worn ear plugs since. They absolutely reduce long term fatigue and leave one fresher at day's end. Dividends are multiplied on multi-day trips.
