Eccentric hub rust

Took my bike into the shop (2020 Panigale V4) original owner. ~22,600 miles

Dealer sent me the following pics saying the rear bearing failed due to rust and caused many other issues, requiring replacement of the hub, spindle, bearings and various other parts.

Tried searching, but cannot find any others with this issue. Keep in mind, I live in Arizona and do not ride when it rains. I have been caught out in the occasional light rainy days, but no monsoons.

Bike is stored in a carport and covered, will be moving to a place with a garage in the near future.

I wash the bike with a pressure washer, I wont be doing that anymore.

I guess this post is to warn others of my negligence.

Thanks all.

that is shocking to me... I pulled my 1199 rear apart during part out, at 30K miles....and it looked new inside, nothing at all like what your showing.

How in the world did that much water get in there?> i would think rain riding would do that, but not just pressure washing...unless you held it on the hub for a long time, very close....dont think you'd do that though...

this is an odd one man...

It is an odd one, I'm definitely talking to the dealer about preventions so I don't have to replace this every 3 years. The only thing I can think that caused it was the pressure washer and using it over the years. (no longer going to use it)

I just feel like if these parts are this sensitive or this exposed, I wouldn't be the only one this could happen too.

The dealer is doing the work and had that on the quote, should I mention not replacing it?

Id definitely inspect it before committing to all new parts, might just be a bearing and seal.

It is the weakness of all Panigale. Water gets in and can't get out.

This is true on pretty much all motorcycles, especially Italian. Never, ever use high pressure water. In fact try to never use water at all. Spray wax/cleaner on the paint and delicate surfaces and fast-drying spray brake cleaner for the chain grease areas.
I use compressed air for loose sand, grit, etc.

Agree with others that powerwashing is definitely bad. But that should have been caught at the 15k mile service since greasing the eccentric is one of the maintenance items at that time. What'd it look like 7k miles ago?

Now I'll know not to use it anymore. just spray and wipes. They didn't tell me there were any issues at the time of that service. That was back in August of 2022, so like 6 months ago.

Just emailed the dealer to see what info they have.

Im sure they did NOT grease the eccentric and many other items listed on the service sheet. You expect it because you pay for it, but it doesn’t get done for sure.

Not for sure… it depends how well the SOP is implemented.

I didn't know this was on the list for them to service but the amount of rust seems to be more than 6 months old. Chances are, they didn't grease it.

Gil, thanks for the post! Thought I was the only one. Same issue here on my 2020 SF V4S. Lesson learned. No more power wash.
I am now paying for replacing the eccentric hub with bearings due to corrosion.
@17k miles. Such a bummer.

Yea, looked at mine a few weeks ago and found the spindle was becoming welded by corrosion to the bearing race:

Mine too was dry as a bone in there:

Cleaned up the spindle with 2500 grit paper and installed the Braking Rear Rotor:

At how many miles on the bike? Glad you caught it before it morphed!

A little over 9000 miles. Bike is a 2020 V4S bought right before the lock-down ........ in March of 2020. I can't believe how dry this area was. I packed the hell out of the area now with heavy duty grease.

Can't believe a new spindle in close to $900 and most of the used ones are at least $300-400 and look like crap. I am also glad I caught this when I did.

Might be worth reporting these instances to NHTSA.

Bearing seizure could be a big safety issue. Just don’t mention “pressure washing” to Ducati. That’s an easy voiding of the warranty.
