Electric connection for GPS system? Is there a plug on the pan?

Hi,

So i bought a tomtom gps System and I'm trying to
connect the power cable to the panigale.

I don't want to connect it directly to the battery, as
I want to find a 12V source which is only active upon
Ignition.

Additionally, it would be great to remove the tomtom charging
Cable when i don't need it.

My monster 1200 got an electric plug on the left side below the tank.
I can simply plug the gps cable in there, route it to my gps quickly and use it.
When i dont need the gps, i can simple disconnect the cable by removing it from the socket.

Is there any plug in the panigale with which I'm able to do the same (12v on ignition)?

I found an electric plug with a dummy plug behind the left upper fairing (for use with the GPS dongle that comes with the dda track Timer.
I tried to measure the voltage, but immediately blew a fuse... Don't want to
try that again.

I read somewhere that I might be able to use the dda plug in the back section of the panigale... But after blowing the fuse on the first plug, I don't want to try out my luck again. Also, I don't know if the dda plug has 12v upon ignition or if it's always on.

Anyone's got any suggestions for me?

The only option I see is running it directly from the battery connections... Why are you averse to doing this??

I'm somehow against the battery option, as I don't want to always have power on the GPS connection (battery drainage, etc).
Also, I like having the option that the gps turns off automatically once it
detects that the power connection is off (for example while parking the machine and turning the ignition off).

I fully understand you. Connecting directly to the battery is just draining it. Every device has its quiescent current. I have the same problem to connect different loads to the board voltage. The only way I found is to splice existing 12V conductors that are already switched and fused.

On the Monster 1200S ist really great, Ducati engineers made a thought: I connected both GPS Nav and grip heaters to that connector, no problems at all. But there's nothing comparable on the Pani :-(

Thanks for the info Gecko.
If I understand correctly, you spliced an existing 12v cable..
Which cable did you use? Does it have 12v upon ignition?

I know I could use the taillight wiring, but I don't want to run
A cable through my bike all the way from the back.

I would rather use an existing wiring in the front of the bike.
Though I'm unsure to tab into the headlight since it's led.
The horn would be another option, but I'm not sure if that works once tabbed in
and I need to use the horn.

The Panigale has the unused gps plug under the left black plastic cover directly under the clutch. On the wiring diagram it is labeled #55. I used it to run my heated grips..works perfectly.
good luck
Ps. It may even use the same connector as your other ducati

Now that's a quality "first post".

Well done and welcome!

My bike has:
1. Direct iPhone 5 harness connected to battery
2. direct garmin zumo mount attached to battery
3. Battery tender pigtail connected to battery
4. Heated grip harness connected to battery
5. Main leads

No battery/alternator problems to date 6,600 miles on the R.

One dead battery once but that was because stupid me left the heated grips on one morning after riding into work.

A navigation unit isn't going to kill your battery. I promise.

Oh, I almost forgot:
6. Gerbings heated clothing harness wired to battery.

Now, I wouldn't ever consider running GPS, and heated grips, and a complete heated suit. That's my breaking point where my paranoia sinks in. Then again, in weather demanding a heated suit I wouldn't be going anywhere needing gps or iPhone charging anyway.

I'm gonna need longer terminal screws soon!

I have similar, just not a wimpy heated grip :D

P.S. Were you around way back when a guy dared to ask if anyone had done this? He got an all out attack from the forum, how dare do something like that to a thoroughbred race bike. As for me, they're on my Beemer, so I ride it in the winter lol.

Thats exactly what i wanted to try out before blowing the fuse while testing the current. That particular plug has got 4 wires...i only need two..which 2 do i need to use (which ones are + and ground)?
Also, do you know if this plug has 12v upon ingition, or is there always a current present even when the bike is turend off?

The 4 wire plug has a switched 12v and ground. The switched wire actually stays on for a short amount of time after you turn off the key.
pic of heated grips with integrated led switch.

Do you have a battery tender? Why not add to it?
I mainly use my iphone when I travel, so I bought SAE to USB cable. Here

Or if you need something that requires a cigarette socket, get this.
Here

Both of those will be fused protected.

Add ram mount to hold your device for a clean look.

The problem with the cigarette socket (and to a lesser extent the USB connector) is that both are suceptible to coming loose from vibration.

Use a Powerlet socket (sometimes called a "BMW-type Socket") which has a positive locking ring in it so your plug-in doesn't back out under vibration. They're standard connectors on BMW and Triumph and have sockets/adaptors/cables to fit any device out there. I power/charge both my cell phone and GPS on the Triumph with them.

I got it working...
As described, i used the GPS plug. I still had one of those turn signal harnesses that was used with the TSB881 (left switch not working) left over. So i cut the appropriate plug and wires of that harness off, and used the red and black wire of that plug for my GPS cable (I disconnected the grey and green wire from that plug)

Before reinstalling the upper left fairing piece back onto the bike, i routed the GPS cable as shown in the pic.

works perfect...when i don't need the GPS, I can simply unplug it and tuck the GPS cable under that left fairing piece until its hidden all the way.

The plug has 12v upon ignition. I first thought that it has a static 12v current, but it takes appr. 1 minute after shutting the bike off before the current cuts out (you can hear a "click" on the bike..then the power shuts off on the plug).

I have Ctek battery tender lead, they make a c-trek cig socket and that powers my zumo, which I have in an oxford sat Nav strap on bag.
Was trying to find 12v on the MT07 for sat Nav yesterday, horn no good as only 12v when activated, opted for front left indicator.
