Stupid question, but I can't find the answer and my bike is elsewhere right now.

I need to install the SMOG/SAS block off plates on my '14 1199S Dark and wanted to know if I needed to remove the entire engine cover on both sides and if so how they pop off. Just trying to gather the knowledge so I an do this quick and fast!

- remove tank
- remove rear subframe
- remove side fairings on both sides
- unscrew left-side engine cover and remove
- you can now swap in the smog plate for the vertical cylinder
- remove electronics from electronics panel on both sides
- remove electronics holder plates, on both sides
- cap off the air valve on both sides securely
- remove ABS pump cover
- remove charcoal canister assy
- remove ABS pump from engine
- you can now swap in the smog plate for the horizontal cylinder
- reassemble your bike

if you haven't taken these things apart before, I'd set aside an entire day to work on this. I've had my bike stripped down this far several times, and when I install my smog plates, I'm expecting to spend at least 4 hours on it.

When you say engine cover are you talking the black plastic covers?
can't help you there..but put on my plates & blockd off the AIR Valve with just the side fairings off.

one thing to know up front, blocking off the plates and if cut air to the valve, your idle and low rpm fueling will suffer. Did this on my bike and it idles lower and generally not as responsive in town pulling away from lights and stop and go traffic.

hoping to resolve this with a rexxer flash.

KismetCaptain: Jesus are you serious...yes I've had the bike down quite a ways before, but that seems ludicrous for some block off plates!

JdGun: Quite a different answer from the above! I guess I just need to go visit the bike.

just did my vertical cylinder. since the engine covers are already off, it took less than 5 minutes.

The horizontal cylinder however....that's going to take some time. And then dealing with sealing off the valve - my kit came with ONE rubber cap, but there are two outlets....

I finished this in about an hour or so. Vertical cylinder was super easy. The Horizontal cylinder required removing the ABS pump bolts and pushing it aside. I capped the sensor on the right side of the bike (Horizontal cylinder inlet) with a 5/8" rubber hose and worm clamp. The vertical cylinder I was in a hurry so I placed a fitted bolt in the inlet hose which I cut back as far as I could manage, has some silicon type sealent to help seal and tightened with a worm clamp.

Same thing i did.... Did you notice that the bike idles lower and also has some low end fueling issues?

horizontal cylinder wasn't so bad - three bolts to undo the ABS pump, then just had to hold it aside (thanks wife!!) while doing the plate.

Still not done however. I removed the valve and am redneck engineering an airbox plug, so I can leave that heavy piece of junk off my bike.

I don't have idle issues without it, because Tuneboy shuts it off via software and the tune is done without using the air injection.

never underestimate redneck engineering. I was able to eliminate the SAS valve completely, by using two 1" fender washers with 5/16" center holes. Screwed them together with an M4 bolt, and with one washer blocking the outside and one blocking the inside, and everything sealed to the rubber washer with silicone, it should be airtight, immobile, and it cost $2 in parts to make.

Little off topic. What's the benefit of block off plates? Will I get more back fires with them?
