Extended Warranty?

Full exhausts, slicks, tunes, things of that nature would give it away.

OK - I thought it was obvious that if you were to make a claim, all the street stuff and tunes would be brought back to stock. Easy enough.

True. Anyone actually have experience with this? 300-500 a year is cheap insurance if you actually ride your 1199 often.

I also have Western as a 5yr extended warranty beyond the Ducati one. I have had to use them in the past and to be honest the result could vary but there is my take. I had an R1 that had a fuel injection issue that had the bike running like crap. Keep in mind I always work on my own bikes, but I had a feeling this was going to be an expensive fix. Took it to dealer, ended up being a pretty labor intensive job fro what I as told. The parts were like $300 tops, but the labor was huge. The bike was almost 2 years out of factory warranty and Western was going back and forth with the dealer about not wanting to pay for certain items. In the end I had to call them and then the tone was very different. Every one of my mechanic friends has told me extended warranty companies are a pain, but most of the time they fold. They have been sued so any times that the cost to them is easier to pay for it, but you may have to fight them.

I love the comments about extended warranties being worthless. If you have ever owned a German car, or an Italian bike has had a serious issue after warranty you would never skip it again.

Interesting opinions both ways. I'm assuming with Ducati the extended warranty would need to be purchased at the time the bike is purchased, correct?

You make a good point. If I remember right, you have to buy the extended warranty before the 24 month factory warranty expires.

Federal law prohibits voiding of a warranty for adding aftermarket parts. Unless the specific part can be PROVEN to have caused the damage, then in the long run your warranty is fine. There are exceptions for some things though. But tires? Slicks wouldn't cause a fogged dash, an exhaust wouldn't cause say a a brake master cylinder to .... out. See where I'm going?

No. Extended Warranty is just like AppleCare for a Mac. Buy it anytime within the original MFG Warranty Period and you're good. So if it comes up on 23 months of ownership and you're looking to sell the bike it may be worth $1,000 as you'll definitely get that much more at sale time.

I agree but that's hardly the way it usually ends of working in the car world. Not sure how bikes work.

I like the peace of mind for the items covered. I have the brochure for the western warranty and tire / wheel package. Its very clear what is not covered and what is. I have extended warranty for my car before and it worked out great. The Western warranty even helps pay rental charges when bike is in the shop for a covered item. When you have a covered defect, simply call them to arrange service along with dealer, notifying them beforehand when it goes in the shop is key to getting reimbursed, not after repairs are done.
As mentioned above there is the resale value boost. On resale, the buyer has much more peace of mind knowing that their purchase is covered for most items that can affect the bikes basic function of getting them from point A to B. Cosmetic stuff is where most of the exclusions are with these warranties, not the durable drivability affecting failures. As a general rule, required maintenance and wear items and cosmetic items are not covered. So in summary, with this warranty, as long as you do your maintenance, you are assured of having a functional bike, even if it looks like .... because the cosmetics are not covered, haha.

I did look at this, but it just showed motorcycle insurance, nothing to do with extended warranty.

Dealer has the brochures for both the bike extended warranty and the wheel/tire warranty. The policy details are in several text sheets when you sign up.

Cost/benefit analysis of extended warranty

Another tough cost/benefit analysis--risk/benefit ratio--of extended warranties.

Worthless? Not if you got it for 200 bucks, I think we'd all agree. $2200? Probably makes a sucker out of us.

How about a poll? What's your tipping point? (Remember, there's the "extended warranty" (EW) and the "tire/wheel care" (TWC), each with a different level of coverage, so specify which warranty & base/good/best coverage.)

WHAT'S THE MOST YOU'D PAY FOR AN EXTENDED WARRANTY & STILL FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT?

Options, if you want:
Best Extended Warranty-
a. $400
b. $900
c. $1500

Best Tire/Wheel Care-
a. $200
b. $400
c. $600

Check out the rest of the forum, and you'll find that people who put ~7,500-10,000+ miles a year on their bikes usually end up benefiting from the EW. On the other hand, people who put barely 10,000 miles during the life of the bike, rarely get the benefit of the EW.

Questions worth asking:
1) How many miles a year do you put on your bike?
2) How little can you pay for the EW? (Roll it into the sale of the bike, or the purchase of a bunch of bling, or a price break on the EW when you service your bike at their dealership instead of another local dealership)
3) If you're not made of money, which would break you more: buying an EW now, or paying for repairs later?
4) How much repair work do you do yourself, and what connections do you have to getting parts near cost?
