My buddy just bought a R1 and got slips. I was there when he picked it up and was talking to the dealer and we were talking about a full graves system. he told me that Yamaha had 3 cats in it. which had me thinking. how many does our bike have and when you get a full system are they removed? if not how do you get rid of them or do you just leave them in. what did you guys with the full system do?

please i am not comparing any other exhaust systems. I just want to know stock how many cats are on the bike and if you get the full system are they still there. if they are do you guys remove them?

I would think the 1199 stock system has only one...as the pipe is 2-1-2... The Termi and Termi slips remove the Cat and lots of weight too...This is one reason the bikes like the R and the Tricolore which had full system or slips as stock were shipped with stock system...its illegal to sell a brand new bike without catalytic converter... The cat sits in that boat anchor under the bike...
Why the R1 would have 3 is a mystery to me..unless they are somehow in series???No idea..

my 09 R1 had only 1 in the y-pipe / midpipe if I'm not mistaken... swapped that out and I was shooting flames all day...

Yep the stock system is in the silencers. With the full they are removed with the Termi silencers. Not sure how they sold Tri hat came with slip on. Did it come with the stock and slip on added later?

Yes, part of the Tri package was that it came with the Termi slip-ons and map to be installed. The bike shipped with the stock slip-ons and I had mine changed at the 621mi service.

the stock system has two single parallel cats. one in each can.

the termi cans don't have these but are fairly similar to the flow of the stock cans, with a perforated pipe in place of the cans and bigger exits to the outside.

there is nothing in the headers in either of the systems (except the flapper valve on the stock one).

My 2008 R1 had only one cat but also per the dealer had some kind of filter. Maybe charcoal? Dumped both for a graves exhaust.

Termi full system only saves a little weight probably because its bigger overall system. I wonder how much the cat portion weighs in the stock system...

Very little, they are pretty small

I have a 2010 R1 and can confirm that there is only 1 cat which is the midpipe. I have the graves 3/4 system which eliminates the cat.

i believe you guys that have the r1 but thats what the dealer said. its a 2013 and he said there are 3 cats as yamaha is trying to be green. i looked at my buddy and was like 3 cats really?
he then said if he gets a full graves system gets rid of the cats a power command and a hp air filter it would give him 25 hp more wonder how true that is

thanks for the answers so all i have to get rid of now is the chocoal canister on the 1199

maybe this is what he was trying to say

4 into 2 into 1 into 2 titanium exhaust system maximizes power output, reduces weight and improves aerodynamics. The dual under seat mufflers provide an aggressive sound. This system contains a 3-way honeycomb catalyzer and an oxygen sensor. The catalytic converter reduces harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions while the oxygen sensor provides feedback to the ECU to maintain optimum fuel/air mixture at all times.

i dont know what this all means but i am sure it slows the bike down

The factory cat is in the y-pipe, behind the headers. Headers on the R1 are titanium and I wouldn't recommend changing them. Aftermarket headers are heavier and only gain about 1-2hp. 3/4 system (y-pipe and slip ons) give you all you need. BMC air filter and SMOG blog off plates and it's good to go. Also the R1 gains much more from a ECU tune rather than a PCV. Factory tune only opens throttle 80% at max opening and that's only above 9k rpm. Before 9k, even if you have the throttle cracked 100% the ECU is controlling the opening of the throttles tapering up to 80%. The crossplane motor has a .... ton of low end torque, peak tq 2-3k rpm sooner than any other liter bike. They did this to prevent too much wheelie angle or the bike flipping over. With a tune you can change the throttle reaction and also turn the fans on before 215* when they come on stock.

I dunno Mark.... I am wondering if the dealer needs a catalytic converter for all the smoke he is blowing up your ass....;)

Waiting for someone to point out the fact that its not just Ducati dealers that will say anything ... I have yet to have a buying experiance where I did not know more about the car/bike then the salesman. A little research goes a long way (or maybe 100s of hours of reseach, but whos keeping track :D ).

I agree.... Its unfortunate...but lets be fair..there are some very knowledgeable sales people out there...honest ones too.... Just not met many...:)
