Fitted GB Racing engine covers while I had the farings off to do the rad guard. Had my paint shop mix up some paint to (almost) match the satin gold that Ducati use. From my experience these are the best engine covers you can buy and are FIM approved. However, they don't look so good in the default black. What do you think?

The GBRacing covers are very good, have a Ninja 600 in my garage that had a slide and unfortunate bump against the wall at track. Saved the engine, otherwise it would have been a total write off.

Was thinking of using the carbon guards from DP but not sure they would hold up as well as the GBR ones in a slide or impact? Is that why you went with the GBR covers??

Nice job on the paint, the black plastic is what is putting me off putting them on my Pani but painting them to match is a good idea.

I looked at the DP ones, but I think they're carbon fiber bling rather than good quality engine protection. I don't buy the Ducati kevlar layer marketing spin when the covers are so thin. The GB racing covers are used by the race teams and provide proven and tested abrasion resistance.

I agree, I'll see if I can take a pic of the kawa tonight, you'll see the scrapes on the GBR covers, I don't think the DP covers could have withstood that.

What colour did you use on the covers. Is there such a colour as "magnesium"??? Did you buy it in a local shop or order online ??

Sorry my bad, you mention your local shop mixed it up. I saw the can next to the bike and...........assumed :-(

No you were right, I did it myself and the paint comes in an aerosol can.

The covers aren't bare magnesium as this would be a silver/grey colour, they're painted and the paint colours motorcycle manufactures use on engine covers don't seem to be published. The paint shop mixed it by hand for me - trial and error. It's a little off, slightly pale, but you would need to look closely to notice and its way better than black.

The recipe (Bilux celulose) is:
TB30 -18.0
02 - 82.0
90 - 86.6
50 - 87.7
MATT - 117.7

Should dry real quick wher you are ;)

Hopefully your paint shop would know what to do with this. You'd need to use a plastic primer first too.

How do they attach? ie do you have to unbolt the clutch cover and using different bolts sandwich the guard and oem cover and bolt in place? This would have to be done during oil change if that's the case?

Some of the old cover bolts come out and some stay in. The protective cover then goes over the top of the original one and you put new (longer) bolts through both the new and old covers using the original bolt holes. The new bolts just need some thread lock on them. The orginal covers stay in place and sealed up, there is no oil loss and need to do this at service time. The new bolts are torqued down to 11Nm and metal inserts in the GB Racing covers compresses the new and old covers into place. Easy job and takes about an hour to do, most of the time spent removing and refitting the farings. New bolts are supplied with the kit.

I agree on the quality issue. I put GBR covers on my track GSXR as they hold up much better. My GSXR is black so no issue with color matching.
I think you did a great job on the color - looks way better than black. In fact I'd not put black ones on there. Is the paint heat resistant? Any idea if it'll stand up to the ducs hi temps?

got them on order from austin racing. way more convincing than the thin carbon stuff. thanks for the color code!

Its not heat resistant, just regular cellulose spray paint. I don't think the bottom end of the engine gets hot enough for this to be a problem. I know this because back in April I took the bike to France in my summer leathers and nearly froze to death. At one point I stopped on a motorway overpass and used the clutch cover to thaw my numb hands. :( It wasn't that hot.

I think its more likely to get scuffed from contact with boots.

I think the below pics show how good those GBRacing covers are.

Bike slid along the track and hit a wall, you can see the frame slider completely bent up and ground away, the GBR cover is also partially ground away but survived better than the frame slider.

BTW "wasn't me" ;-)
