Hey everyone, Just wondering how much people have been stung to fix the gear sensor issue as I'm way out of warranty and I gotta take it in for a on going oil leak issue in the warranty period. Bike has been a bit of a head ache with heaps of little probs since i bought it which cause me too loose a day at the least every time i gotta have it looked at. Starting to think about a trade in on 1299s any thoughts on this as well??.

Trading it in, isn't going to help. The 1299 is even more extreme and fragile than the 1199. The 1199 was mostly vendor problems common to any brand new fresh slate machine.

Oil leak is an easy fix. Valve cover gasket most likely. Engines under race levels of internal vacuum have these issues.

Gear sensor is also an easy fix (if you get an up to date service tech). The 1299 has the exact same problem. Park the bike in first gear every night, NOT NEUTRAL. Why, I don't know,, but it's helped many.

I think it's a calibration thing when the ECM boots up. A minor bug. The sensor can also be recalibrated by the tech. I think it's a btch to replace, but most of the ones that were replaced, didn't need replacement.

IMO, these should be warranty items, even if the bike is out of warranty. They would be if it was my gig. Or I'd try sticking the repairs on a vin# that was under warranty still. Should be small potatos cost if they can't get warranty.

That sucks.

See if you can get help for specific problems on the bike through the forum. What I would do is get an extended warranty, if you decide to keep the bike. You can buy the extended warranty after the original one is expired. They have to inspect the bike. A lot of people here have said that their repairs beyond the 2 years have exceeded what they paid for the warranty.

I had my gear sensor stuck in 1st even when the bike is on Neutral when the engine was at 200+ Fahrenheit. Dealer calibrated it and it's been fixed. I've had 3 Panigales and seldom got problems. Not one had over 4K miles though.

If not, get the 1299 and get the extended warranty if you know you're going to keep it beyond 2 years. The 1299 is an overall better bike.

Thanks guys some good advice will have to take her in and have a chat to the tech and maybe sales man.

What evidence are you basing this outlandish crap on?

16mm piston at 10,000+ rpm. Do the math. :D

If the horsepower wars continue much longer, it's the death knell for twins. I've made my peace with the fact that my Panigale is a grenade as much as any of Foggy's trophy bikes were. YMMV.

So no evidence at all then.

I'm quite sure the science of metallurgy, machining and manufacturing in general has increased as well. The horsepower increases didn't occur in a vacuum.

I had my gear sensor replaced because it failed to read 6th gear and sometimes neutral but it was under warranty for me.

I had my gear sensor replaced under extended warranty. ($300 Cdn total) My issue was the gear indicator would flash 1st gear while in neutral. It was intermittent but only occurred after the bike had been ridden for 30+ min.

Needless to say, it really sucks holding the clutch endlessly in heavy traffic or while waiting at traffic lights for fear of the bike stalling and not being able to get neutral again in order to restart it.

When the tech was teaching the gear sensor the BBS started having issues and the tech said that they were likely caused by the faulty gear sensor. I am waiting for approval from the extended warranty provider to replace the BBS.

A known good BBS was fitted to my bike and worked properly.

Why would you have to hold the clutch in endlessly? You can start the bike in gear by holding in the clutch, and you should be able to find neutral without the gear indicator. My 1199 was my first bike that had a gear indicator from the factory.

So do you think he should fix, an easy to fix bike, or trade it in for a 1299?

I think he's looking for validation in wanting to trade in for a 1299. Bottom line, its his bike and wallet. Do what makes you happy.

.

My bike does NOT start while in first gear while holding the clutch in. If the electronics thought it was still in first while in neutral it might have cut the engine, similar to the safety that cuts the engine if you put the bike in gear with the stand down (separate sensor).

If the indicator thought it was in first I would then be unable to restart it and I would have become stranded. Therefore I kept the bike in first gear rather than risk using neutral with a faulty gear sensor reading saying it was still in first.

Update: BBS and gear sensor replaced. So far (100kms) the issue hasn't returned.

Normally just a re-flash of the gear sensor works with no need to renew BBS. Its worked for most over the past few years here on the forum including my bike back in 2012 shortly after I bought it. One of the only things to go wrong actually. Touch wood.

Mine was gear sensor and the extent of the syndrome if left unchecked is rough running and engine shutdown sometimes at high speed. My bike bucked and pulled at me on the freeway,no joy till BV Ducati took her in and their master tech and great service writer replaced the position sensor.

My Ducati tech replaced the faulty sensor and when he was trying to re-teach the gear selector it would not learn which eventually led to the BBS replacement. He had it hooked up and was trying everything including contacting Ducati for their suggestions. Unfortunately the tech was out winning some local races when I came in to pick up the bike, otherwise I would have asked for more of the details.

Forgot to mention My BBS exhibited faults when bike had rough running along with erratic gear display. The sensor fixed it all and its been good for over 10k miles now.

So, if I understand correctly this will help with calibration when powering up the bike or shutting down the bike?

No idea. But it works.

I shutdown in N. And start up in N. Only at the beginning and end of the day, I'll park in 1st throughout the day.

Solution found:

Turns out that my clutch lever pin had fallen out so the switch was not receiving the input that the clutch was disengaged so it wouldn't start when the gear indicator read any gear.
