Hard starting

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Mine did the hardstarting bit. Would crank fine, but not start. After letting it cool down for 15min more, it started fine.

I did get the puff of smoke. I think the ECM is confused about something, and/or some sort of fuel problem.

Hasn't been a problem, can't blame a parked 230 degree engine for being a little pissed off.

Ideas:
-shut down after some traffic engine was really hot. Fuel tank was really hot. Vapor lock from sitting hot?
-tank was getting low, but I may have overfilled it on the last fill. Oops.

I've been having the same issue and I have come to the conclusion it is gas. When I use a high octane gas like Sunoco 94, I have start problems right away, sometimes even when the engine is cold. It also happens with Shell V Power which is weird because it is only 91. Anyway, as soon as I put in Sunoco 91 or similar fuel in a near empty tank, my starting problems instantly disappear. I've gone back and forth with gas to test my theory and it is definitly the cause of my issues. I'm going in for the right handlebar recall soon and will talk to the dealer about the hard starting. Maybe I still need a TPS adjustment.

You remove the charcoal canister yet ?

Since coming back from the dealer I haven't had a problem. Being in Oz we don't have the charcoal filter and as far as the fuel is concerned I am using the same as I always have. The dealer replaced my plugs and adjusted the TPS and that has made the difference. Mind you it has been cold here (by Aussie standards) so I can't say on a hot day. Mind you I am getting the bike up to 103 degrees through town.

Back to the dealer I say.

My bike still has the canister and I believe that Canadian bikes have the same emmissions standards as California.
I'm wondering if there are 2 separate starting issues: 1 being canister related and the other being fuel/TPS related. Maybe some folks have both.

Hello
I also get the hard starting from time to time especially after a stop at a restaurant or something like that. It also sometimes cranks cranks cranks then like a missfire and stop. Then I press "Start" again and it comes to life  :D

Sorry but what is "TPS"?

Sir Richi: TPS = Throttle Position Sensor.
Mine starts easily. After a hard run I do a cool down for a few kms before parking, finding neutral and switching off. On one occasion only I started the bike cold in wet mode. It fired up, ran for 30 seconds and stalled. After leaving in the sun for 30 minutes it still wouldn't start. It was like it lost all it's stored tune data and was pumping in raw fuel flooding the engine. You could smell raw fuel in the exhaust. I changed to sport mode and away it went. The problem has never recurred.

I would tend to agree with the above.

I usually run on SuperUnleaded (97) here in the UK. I'm just back from a 850 mile round trip of Scotland where Super is quite scarce the further north you go. I noticed that once I switched to normal unleaded (95), after may be the second tank, no more occasional stall resulting in a hard start. Is the ECU clever enough to re-calibrate? It must, as the first tank, the engine was running like a dog. The second 1/2 of the trip, the bike ran like a dream, with no hard starting.

I doubt it's dodgy fuel, as it happens too regular. 8.5k (miles) on the clock.

From now on, I'm staying clear of superunleaded.

We don't have the canister in the UK so it wouldn't be that.

I would agree it may be fuel related however, I haven't had the hard start problems. As already mentioned in this thread, I got them after installing the Akrapovic system. Once the ECU got it's head round it, no further problems.

BUT, I have noticed that the random cutting out and stalling on the odd occasion seems to be centered around what type of fuel I have put in.

The automobile ECUs have knock sensors to retard the ignition timing and prevent early detonation from bad gas etc. I don't think/know if the 1199 has knock sensors.

So I went to the dealer about the hard start issue. Mine would still be hard to start even when the tank was low. Perhaps there was residual fuel in the charcoal canister causing problems?? I told the tech about my experience with different fuel. His response was to remove the canister and don't use 94 octane. No profound revelation there. So I removed the canister then had a track day the next day. The bike got good and hot on every session and it started perfectly every time. I used Esso 91.
