Hi Guys - long time lurker, first time post!

Have been enjoying my 1199 Base ABS - until a few days ago...

Was riding my 1199 back from Northern Ireland to London. I was about sixty miles from London on the M40, on the outside lane @ around 80mph when massive chatter starting to come from the rear of the bike. It was like sitting on a jack hammer - it was unreal!

Pulled in at next petrol station and noticed the rear tyre was very marked up...mmm, thought that was unusual to say the least.

Then i seen this sticking out the side of the bike...

Now im thinking - was the swingarm about to fall out of the back of my bike @ a very busy time on the M40 on the outside lane!?

BTW the only thing which is holding this bolt in, was the fairing - which was cracked from the pressure.

Im i wrong in thinking that this bolt hold both the swingarm and footrest assembly all together?

Getting a feeling that no one wants to talk about this issue or what could of happened. All i have heard, is the parts are ordered, bike will be fixed...

you are a very lucky man to have pulled over and caught this !!!!

appears your swingarm bolt came lose and your rear tire was not aligned, hence then weird wear on the tire. that swingarm could have came apart while you were riding and would have been a nasty experience.

apparently your bike might have needed to be looked at for that swingarm recal.

contacted dealer yet??

yeah dude, glad you caught that !

I'd imagine how they feel, you could have been seriously injured or and even a major law suit.

DUCATI/dealers haven't handled notifying affected people of the recals very well. I mean on my previous Pani, I found out about the recal on here way before I heard anything from dealer and even then, I was the one who called and asked them if my bike was affected. I immediately took my bike in and after recal was done, Then I cat a letter in the mail from Ducati notifying me :-/.

I just picked up a new one yesterday and I made sure it was current with all the recals.
 
Never got recall letter! Despite having my email address, mobile number - it's seems only recall letters get posted out! Wonder how ducati monitor the recall response times, how they follow this up, if a certian bike has not come in?

Im hearing the recall letter regarding this issue states "that it may interfere with rear braking controls.." it does not state your swingarm might fall out!

Oh brother that's scary brotha, glad you pulled off in time. Tell them you guys owe me a fairing , tires and new bolt
 
I've owned a few Ducatis in the past - 916, Hypermotard, 1098s and have enjoyed these bikes immensely!

Can't even begin to yell you guys, how pi**ed off with this issue i am....gutted does not even come near it.

The simple truth is - this issue will/could cost somebody their life.

Dude! Glad your ok> That would of sucked, royally! I found the cause though. You need a fender eliminator! ....kidding. Seriously man, you dodged a bullet. Amen!
 
I am very very glad that you're okay, called it quits and pulled the bike over.

It honestly never ceases to amaze me of the indiscriminate quality control that Ducati has on their line. It's almost a mandatory rule that the owners of new Ducati's carry out they're own complete delivery checks, as it would seem that a lot of outlets couldn't be bothered to check the vehicle properly from the factory.

That's right down Scary...glad you where smart enough to pull over right away and avoid a possible accident and injury, going to check over my bike.

Hey all,

I just wanted to contribute so you know that you aren't the only guys out there with crazy panigale experiences.

A few months ago when i purchased my panigale, I rode it off the showroom floor and got about 4 miles away. I downshifted so i could put on the power to pass this truck and it felt like the shift lever was loose. i looked down to see it swinging back and forth... looked up and almost hit the car in front of me. I managed to pull off a pretty good stoppie and get to the side of the road to check it out. the bolt that was supposed to be holding the lever in was hanging out on the bottom fairing.. no locktite on it.. nothing.

I was pretty upset that i had been riding for like 4 minutes and .... was already going wrong hahaha..

Just remember that surviving stuff like that makes you a better rider.. its unfortunate that you have to be put in some pretty dangerous situations to learn valuable things

I hope they fix that up for you and you dont have to replace that tire. :D
 
What to say that hasn't been said!

If you could push the dealer to confirm 100% if your bike was affected by the swing arm recall, that would be usefull for us all.
 
Damn! Lucky guy! Glad to see you made it out ok and didn't crash. Shame on your dealer for not notifying you
 
I've seen my tyre marked up like that once before - was travelling 170kph+ with some hard acceleration on a rough road surface for 100km+. Thought it looked weird but when I got home it had gone back to normal wear. Was nothing wring with swing arm bolt.
