Hi all my names Michael and i'm from Perth Western Australia. i'm a 40 year old that wants to return to the bike scene after a 15 year hiatus. i've never ridden a Ducati only Yamaha's back in the 90's. I have to be up front and say no one in my family wants me to get back on a bike for safety reasons and i also have my concerns but it's something i miss and something i know i'll enjoy as soon as i'm back on a bike.
The question i'd like to know is there a lot of difference between the 1199s and the 899 apart from the obvious power and cost ? I love everything i've read and seen about the 1199s and that's what ive got my heart set on so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the welcome and i'll look forward to reading some great threads about this awesome bike :)

I think you should ride both back to back a couple times, personally I don't think the S is the best value if go that far in price you just as well spend the extra on the R which cannot be replicated in parts $ but it may be just too much I mean 1199 period, it's an amazing bike but one that has you riding very fast, I just cannot ride mine slowly maybe for a short period but that's it, if you live in an area with great roads few police / speed traps etc like I do then you have evaluate your options, nice think though is you choose power setting to allow time to get use to theses bikes

I can relate as my hiatus lasted 20 yrs (I'm 42) and went looking at the 899 but couldn't get past the swing arm. I went with the S because I wanted the black but I've since added exhaust and carbon goodies that come on the R. I agree with sean999, if it's not a color thing go with the R at that price point.

Beware though.......there are now 2 Duc's in my garage. It's an addiction.

Thank you both for your helpful tips it's much appreciated. i've just been to the local dealer and seen the 1199s in the flesh and WOW :) im blown away by the sound of that bike, you tube definitely does not do it justice. I'm booking a test ride in a couple of weeks and will ride both 899 and 1199s i can't wait. He will also will throw in Termi slip ons if i buy the 1199s 13/14 model for $36,390.
TTT did you struggle with the colours at all or was your mind already made up with the black ?

G'day Bonz from Peter in Karratha Western Australia. I have just got back in to riding after a 12 year break. I've just brought a 2014 1199r. What an awesome bike, looking forward to bringing it down to Perth next weekend. I brought my bike brand new through the dealership in Bunbury (Wayne Patterson's Motorcycle Centre), the Staff (Wayne, Glenda and Todd) we're absolutely fantastic to deal with, cannot speak highly enough of all the effort they put in to make the sale all smooth sailing. Give them a ring it will be worth your while. All the best in the exciting decision of what 1199 you buy.

Regards Peter.

I didn't I knew I wanted the black. But the silver/grey on the R tank is hard to beat. At that price I bet they offered to throw in the exhaust. Do a little research before you pull the trigger at that price.

Hey mate, you will have a blast on the 'S', I would agree with TTT though, you should shop around a bit for price, I got an ex demo with 1000km's on the clock with slip on termi system for 29K on the east coast, you may be a bit limited with your dealers over there but it only costs $1100 to transport to Perth, may be worth a couple of calls, enjoy the experience.

Cheers
JT

Thanks again everyone will definitely do my research on getting this bike for the right price. Your spot on JonT we are pretty limited in dealers over here only 2 local and one in Bunbury.Peter they sound like good folks and obviously rate their customers so will definitely give them a call. The price was at Fraser's and to be honest the $36,390 for the S is pretty steep when he offered $28,790 for the standard and Termis fitted. Not sure if the 8k is justified at Fraser's.
Cheers All

Hey Bonz

I'm in Perth and on an 1199S, which I bought recently and am still running in. It's an awesome machine. I thought about the 899 but the engineer who works on my bikes swayed me to the 1199. If you have a few extra dollars you can do a lot with tuning to improve rideability at non-hyper speeds ;) I did consider the R but down here there is a big jump in price from the S to the R, plus I don't think the full termi system the R comes with is as good as the akra full system, which can be had at a decent price if you shop around (Ducati Omaha gets my recommendation). I'm also not a huge fan of titanium engine parts as I've had titanium crack and shear in the past. Good for short-circuit racing for dudes who have time and wedge enough to strip, inspect and rebuild engines but not for us mere mortals. YMMV.

I dealt with Brock Craig at Causeway KTM Ducati. He was excellent and I got a good price on it. I chose not to deal with Fraser's.

Hey thanks Mr Flannel
Do you think Fraser's are not very flexible on deals or was the service just better at KTM ? Definitely going for the 1199 now its just a matter of getting a decent deal for an S model otherwise will have to be a standard. What things have you changed on your bike so far ? Did you get rid of the snow plough guard at the rear ?
Cheers

Hey Bonz, definitely get rid of the guard, they are no longer a legal requirement so that is the first thing to go, I got the DP tail tidy which shortens up the tail light asasembly, tucks it back under the seat, ceramic coated the exhaust headers for approx $150-00, helps a bit with the heat but also looks good, powder coated the rear sets and passenger pegs while it was there plus a few more little mods, not too over the top, about $1500-00 all up. Have attached a couple of pics. Each to their own but I think a little persoinalization looks good with these bikes. Look forward to seeing yours when you pick it up.

Cheers
JT

Awesome ride JT !! I bet that brings a smile to your face everytime you go for a ride. Big fan of the personal touches you've done really sets the bike off. I'll definitely be getting rid of that guard as it looks way too hideous. JT is the heat thing overrated ?? or is it something of a concern,i haven't been for a test ride yet but can only imagine they won't let me ride it for any great length of time, so not sure if i'll get to feel this heat from the bike with a short ride.

Cheers

Thanks mate, the heat is definitely there but I don't commute on mine, I live in the twistys in the hinterland so don't have much stop start. I have been through Brisbane a couple of times and it does get warm but not so much that it's painful, I would say a little uncomfortable but no worse than that. So I think yes, the heat issue is overrated, I would certainly not let it stop you from getting the bike, this thing is awesome, has totally rikindled my passion for riding, I had been on bikes my whole life and only bought my first car when I was 42, after a few years off them I decided it was time again to get back into it and the Ducati still surprises me everytime I take it out, you won't be disappointed.

Cheers

PM Sent - I'm also from Perth and in a very similar boat than you. I'm torn between the 899 and 1299 as well. Waiting on Frasers to get demo bikes of both so I can test and make up my own mind. Have you decided which one you're going to get yet?

Causeway have lost there ducati, so you are left with Frasers which like you i chose not to deal with either

Fraser still don't have a price or ETA on the 1299. And still want you to throw down $1000 deposit to hold your spot in the line. Which is ....... BS when they can't even give you a price or ETA

I don't suspect Frasers will get a demo 1299 for awhile, just like the 1199 it took them around 6 months to get one

Best mod is Akrapovic Exhuast and full tune. If you are in perth have a chat to Justin over at pro twin (http://www.protwin.com.au/), he is the only one i let touch my bike here in perth.

I could not get a firm price from them but was told that the first shipment is just "S" models. The first base ones will be here around June/July. Price is $29 900 ride away I think (from memory). Its a $1000 more than what the 1199's were. I specifically asked about the base since that is what I would be looking at. Either that or the 899.

I spoke to Wayne from Bunbury Ducatias well. What a great guy. He mentioned he will deliver a new bike to my house in Perth at no charge.

Wayne is the way to go! I have had way to many problems in the past with Frasers to give them the time of day now.

Wayne has been more than helpful in helping me sort out my warranty/recall issues even though i bought my bike from Frasers
