How good or bad are the LED headlights?

LEDs man. Much brighter than anything out there; laser will be the next big thing though.

Like RRnold said, broader/brighter beam compared to Xenon but doesn't have the range of projected xenon beam.

the biggest difference that I've ridden with 1199 base head lights with HIDs vs the LED head lights, is that the LED head light gives a much more smoother, spread out light output that doesn't have have hot spots.

I would compare it to a car with HIDs in real HID projector headlights vs HIDs in non-projector headlights

That's exactly the problem with these LED headlights. They scatter the light like a halogen headlight housing with a PnP HID kit. They are bright as hell and I get multiple drivers flashing their high beams at me.

Having had both the Panigale LED and Halogen headlights, I'm saying the LED is worlds better in every way. Brightness, projection, flood...you name it.

HIDs that rest in ACTUAL projectors complete with the proper lenses would give you better distance, but I've seen no such animal for the 1199. The kits that just place a ballast and an HID bulb into a halogen designed system are far from being close to the LED assembly.

Ok, we got it, LEDs are good lights. We with the Bases could care less. We just add the LED aftermarket bulbs, and voila, LED.

After all:

It's all about the base, / 'Bout the base, no S's.....

The LED assembly from Ducati and putting LED bulbs into your halogen assembly isn't the same. ;)

The color temp is better than halogen, and you're saving quite a bit of money over the conversion to a 1199S light, but the result just isn't there. Been there.

I think the "Basers" have S and R envy! Basking in our perfectly focused LED headlamps... Fully adjustable Ohlins electronic suspension... Our forged light alloy rims... Oh, and for some, uber light Titanium connecting rods, valves and lightweight crankshaft resulting in superior revs! :)

Nope.

I am filled with pity for those who need a computer to adjust their suspension instead of knowing how to do it themselves. ;)

Or for those like myself who get a kick out of modifying a bike (or car) regardless of what it already comes with. If i had gotten an S, i would have still changed the ugly chicken feet wheels and still have done most of the mods I've already done. Therefore, it's always better to start with a base and put that $5k difference into aftermarket parts and be better off than an S.

Yep that's fun but you can't purchase similar S components without spending more money...

Oh now. Don't get your knickers in a twist! I was just being playful...

Adjusting manual suspension requires the same understanding of suspension setup. With electronic rebound and dampening it's just a couple of button presses to make changes. No screwdrivers or wrenches required. Not to mention the quality of Ohlins components. Add a 3 mode configuration and you can test different complete setups with a button press.

Not sure people have 'envy'. As you can get a better set up bike with an 899 or 1199 base then the cost of an 1199s. Along with that, most people who tend to race more like to gut the suspension on either bike and put an aftermarket suspension in, be it ohlins or bitubo. With the base forks being bigger, some die hard trackers like that more then the forks on the S. Personally, I like one thing more on the S that's not on the base, and that's the headlight, suspension and wheels didn't matter as I was going with bst and aftermarket suspension set up before getting the bike... But as I said, people trash that LED for a track bike anyway due to the weight (and new 1199 R dropped it for same reason) so to make the call that base owners has envy of an S is a tad off base

Guys... It was an attempt at levity, humor, frivolity. Sheesh

***popcorn***

I'm learning a lot from this. Without this, I would have to do researches, read brochures, etc to find out differences between base and S models. I got my S just because the Led headlight :)
