I was out at my local Ducati dinner meeting last night and the owner of the local Ducati dealership was there having dinner with us.

He stated he received a letter from Ducati telling him he was not allowed to install any none DOT approved aftermarket exhaust unless the bike was brought into the shop without headlights or tail lights and was not ridden into the shop, i.e. in track mode. He didn't state whether these were Ducati aftermarket or other 3rd party exhausts

This is part of the EC4 crackdown on non compliant exhausts. I guess this has been the case in CA, but he made it sound like there were legal issues that could result in large fines that could go all the way back to Ducati Corporate.

Hmmmmm, interesting... That's why we have a killer forum where you can ask questions and do the install yourself! Not to mention the money you would save...

Dealers turning down absurdly priced $500+ exhaust installs? Not a shot by me. These stealerships would slash their mothers for revenue in my parts.

Its Ducati telling the dealers they cant do the installs, its not the dealers themselves not wanting to do them

Yup, it's the real deal. We'll be living in a world of only homologated exhausts very shortly........ At least we can sleep peacefully knowing that we're "saving" the environment with our lame exhausts.

So if someone puts on the "Track only" Akra exhaust on a new Euro 4 Ducati. Will that kill their warranty?

Has nothing to do with warranty, it deals with liability for the manufacturer of selling non-EPA legal exhausts for installation on street vehicles that are subject to EPA regulations. Ducati feel they have potential liability for this, and want to cover themselves by having a legal document provided certifying that the non-EPA legal exhaust is only going to be used on a non-EPA regulated vehicle (i.e. racing use only).

dieselgate and VW cold feet might have to do with that as well

yeah my dealer in australia quoted me $550 to install a set of slip-ons, $100 to install Race seat and over $1000 to change a water pump (pump price on top)

When I was putting my new (to this bike) forks in I was surprised to find it was missing the 3 bolts for the bottom triple on one side, luckily the 1 bolt on the top triple was so tight I almost had to strip it to get it out. I have all the service documentation and it has been looked after by one dealer.

3000km ago it had a fork replaced for "no rebound" luckily no charge to the customer (for endangering his life, or mine for that matter).

The guy who owned it before is a straight up guy but no mechanical smarts, he even had them put a battery in it last month and an oil change, filter, battery and tender before advertising it $660

There are some really good, switched on and caring dealers Jarel comes to mind when I say this and guys who work for them like DOC at Ducati in Coffs in NSW. But the world is full of all sorts of people in all industries so we shouldn't generalise.

I hope that doesn't mean those of us with track bikes are going to have to find a Corse dealer (and pay Corse prices) to get our exhaust systems?

If it's a track bike, no problem. The dealer just has to register the exhaust with the VIN# of the bike, and provide photographic evidence that the bike is not street-legal.

...or just add a sundries change of $300 and say the customer installed it himself.

I'm just curious Chris. Do you use AMS in Dallas or the dealer in Plano?

Yeah....Stand by for this....Dealer installs of the entire manifold on full systems and everything except putting the muffler on and tightening the bolts. they show the customer exactly how to, with tools. Then they didnt install aftermarket exhaust, they did a "mock up" of what the exhaust would look like for the customer to look at. Or some explanation.

Trust me....you start taking money from smaller dealers, they WILL find away around this ........ nonsense.

NOLA

I saw all this coming after the Harley EPA debacle. Hit a big high profile company first followed by the little guys. Hell, they hit West Coast Choppers and he's little, but big publicity.
