Is there a way to tell compound (SC1/SC2/SC3) when label is missing?

Pirelli SBK slicks usually have a green/yellow painted tag on them that indicates the compound - SC0/SC1/SC2/SC3. However, it is easy to peel those off altogether.

When those labels are missing, does anyone know of another way to verify what compound the tire is? Past few times I have ordered slicks online, they have arrived with the compound label missing and I would feel better if there was a way to verify I am receiving exactly the compound ordered.

Per this guide from Pirelli, it does not seem like there are any hard markings on the tire to indicate compound. But I wanted to check with folks here anyway.

post a pic of them lets see
Have never had a set of slicks that didn't have compound markings on the tire and usually always the sticker on them with compound

So I know some tyre manufacturers sponsor some race events… and if someone got some free tyres they might want to make a bit of cash by selling them instead of using them

I know in the Uk these even have bar codes on them for I’d….

Ok spoke to the online retailer - he verbally explained that they have to remove labels and/or tags depending on which part of the country the tires are shipping to. They don't want to run afoul of local distributors/dealers on some compounds. It ties because even before I ordered them and was inquiring about availability, the first question they asked was "who will you take them to for mounting?" Retailer assured me on their honor that it is indeed an SC1 even if it won't say it on the tire.

Seems sketchy but I can see the sales territory politics...

I sent your question to the retired Pirelli representative guy, if someone knows it would be him. I’ll let you know as soon as he responds.

They didn't want to run afoul of John @ South Central Race Center (P-1 Racing) in Tomball, TX. He is the central region distrubutor for Pirelli.

Yes, know Huthcinson well. He was the one that did the suspension work on my v4.

Funny story - I bought a dozen tires from him 18 months ago when the 180x55 slicks were made on a limited run (I stocked up for the 690 Kramer). He pulled the exact same move on me - half the tires in SC2 had the right labels on them and half the tires ordered in SC1 showed up unlabeled with "SC1" written on them with a sharpie pen. I asked John about it and he said they were mislabeled from factory which I wasn't convinced by 100%, but let slide since we know John well. I wonder if John was doing the same thing as my current retailer - masking SC1s from his inventory.....

Wonder what the heck is up with SC1s and all this mafia-grade accounting and laundering..

What does your sidewall lettering say, does it start with EB?
