I had a similar experience. I switched to the taller WSBK profile Pirelli's and tested them out at the track a few days ago. I naively anticipated some steering or other issues up front but never experienced any. Instead, I did notice unusual lack of grip on turn exists as my pace increased, which I attributed to exceedingly hot track temps or incorrect tire pressure. I also had some new wear patterns that I never saw before. A guru nearby suggested I take out a little shock preload and damping, and sure enough, that did the trick. Drive grip was immediately improved, I went 2 seconds faster, and set my all time fastest speed on the straight by 3 MPH.
I reviewed my videos afterward and listened for the DTC kicking in, and it was pretty clear. Prior to the change, DTC was kicking in on many exits and sometimes in a straight line in 3rd gear, unsettling the bike, and I almost high-sided once. After the change (-1 mm preload, -2 clicks compression) the bike was very planted and stable under hard acceleration. I'm a believer now: rear ride height and/or shock play does have a profound effect, and the 5mm taller 200/65 can muck with your setup!
From my tuning book:
SYMPTOM: sudden loss of rear traction on acceleration
CAUSE: insufficient squat
POSSIBLE REMEDIES: reduce compression damping, reduce rear preload, reduce rear ride height, lower the forks, reduce front rebound damping, or lower the swingarm pivot.
I think the strength of the V4 is acceleration so I'm going to pay more attention to optimizing the rear settings for exit drive. Fun stuff!
