I'd advise you to eschew the cruiser and get a dirt bike if you have any reasonable access to places to ride it. You can have tons of fun without many of the risks of riding on the road and you can develop skills that make you a better rider when you get back to your Pani. Try a KTM 350, 400, or 450. They're easy to ride because the engine makes enough power to pull you around almost from idle without being peaky.
 
my friend picked up a used (slightly) V7 Guzzi, he paid under $6K for it.

it is a total blast to ride
 
how could u not consider the VMAX?? the 2014 has nice electronics package to boot...
 
Get a used Yamaha Warrior for like $3000--4000, update the front end with one off a Duc. All AL frame, can't beat that!... go to Patrick Racing and hook it up. Stupid fast and a very light weight cruiser.

What a hoot!
