Hello all I'm new here.

So I was planing on buying a new R1M but the real estate deal I was going to use the money from to pay for it has been delay so I had to cancel my order. The only other 2 bikes that have all I want are the new s1krr and the 1299s and the BMW is just too damn ugly. So looks like I'll get a new 1299s. I do have one concern though. I rode a 1199s for one session at a track day last summer I like everything except the throttle from off to on felt VERY jerky. every time I rolled on out of a corner it felt like a high side waiting to happen. This was the first v twin I have ever ridden and I only rode it for 20 mins so some of it may be getting used to it. So I'm just wondering if the 1299 will have the same jerky throttle? Maybe a pipe and tune will help that out along with just getting used to it. What do you guys think about the throttle on ducs? Easy to get used to after a while? Maybe the 1299 won't have this problem? Been reading a bunch of reviews but havnt seen much on this issue.

So far no issues said from the few rides. But most people fixed it with a sprocket change and changing the ebc settings. I never noticed it on the 1199s though.

Welcome to the forum.

A few guys on the board including myself installed the Rapidbike module and that unit fixes the on off issue, or surging problem.

Cool good to hear that it's most likely a fixable issue if it is a issue on the 1299.

My bike has the stock gearing. It can be a little jerkey under 30mph if I don't focus on being smooth on the throttle, or run over some bumps. Anything over 30 is silky smooth. I think it just takes getting used to. Getting on the throttle as soon as i get leaned over (before the apex) seems to keep the suspension and, therefore, the throttle right where it wants to be.

You won't be disappointed if you buy one of these bikes. I've had mine for almost a year and I'm still obsessed with it.

^^ This.

I'm sure there's a few 1199s that have had a genuine throttle issue that needed correcting.

But the real fix to the "jerky throttle" is to get smoother/more precise with throttle input. Fly-by-wire throttle setup is sensitive. It doesn't do well with sloppy, ham-fisted technique.

The early 1199s were abrupt and hesitant off throttle. Add the prodigious amount of torque these bikes produce down low and I could see how you felt like you were going to highside every time you got on the throttle. But with each software update, the on/off throttle abruptness got better. Also, there are two settings for throttle responsiveness--one is hi and one is low. The high is pretty immediate and fairly snappy--that's the setting I'm guessing you were in. Had you been in low you probably wouldn't have been concerned.

A twin will never be as smooth as an inline 4 and jumping off of one and onto the other will always require a recalibration of the nerves between the brain and wrist, but I would expect you won't have any issues with the new 1299.

As for the S1000s Schizoid looks--I read that this year BMW mirror-imaged the headlights (flipping the 'round' and the 'winky' eyes from one side to the other). I'm sure a collective sigh of relief washed over the guys at Ducati when they heard that BMW was sticking with the 'Uncle Leo' face. Those ...... up headlights have sold hundreds of Panigales!

Thanks for the info. That was my only hesitation about the new 1299. I do think a lot of it was because I'm so used to my gsxr1k it's got full yosh pipe , power commander, tune it's super smooth. I think a little getting used to it plus a pipe and tune and I'll be fine on the 1299.

Or just get used to riding it. I've never had any issues with surging or anything on my 1199 but I came from an 848.

Surging went away after installing TuneBoy and running full Akra tune (due to me having cored exhausts). Runs great now!

Mach, I don't understand what's stopping you from buying the R1? You're going to be spending the same money for the Duck or Bimmer soooooo...what's the problem? It sounds like you have doubts about anything but the Yamaha so just pull the trigger. I'm 100% sure you can still pick up one; especially after the first-run rush.

I have all my money wrapped up in a real estate deal that has been delayed. I had 500 down on the r1m but needed to put another 2k down before Friday to lock it in. Since my deal has been delayed I don't have it right now so had to back out on the r1m. There are only 500 r1m's available in the US so I'm out of luck. I was actually looking into the 1299 anyway. The only thing I did not like about the 1199 was the jerky throttle but like I said it was my first time on a v twin and it was bone stock. The 1299s has everything I want I just wanted to know if some of the issue I had could be fixed with a tune or if you just get used to it after a while. Since everyone says that is the case I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on a 1299s.

EBC3 is your friend, on and off track. It's the only setting where I can actually feel the bike in a corner go from understeer to neutral to oversteer. Once you hit oversteer rip the throttle open to set your line and go! Well, I'm taking a few liberties with that description but hopefully other EBC3 fans know exactly what I'm talking about!

If you are settling for something and have your heart on something else you will never ever be satisfied.
