More on the smoking issue

My bike smoked like a trooper on first start-up, then never again.

Then it smoked the same after the termi install, but not since.

How strange, unless the exhausts are contributing to this phenomenon?

I often get panicky on big purchases like this one. My wife is a little less wishy washy. She has a sense of these things and for as long as I've known her she's never been wrong.

She says to go get the bike a don't worry about it  I hope she's right!

A women's intuition, a powerful and scary thing! Sounds like an amazing wife you got there... ;)

hey srleadjb, good to see you here. when is your bike due?
BTW you're gonna like it here - there are some characters... just like on MS. :D

I have done 595 miles now, it didn't smoke on very first start up, but maybe cos it hadn't done any miles. It smoked after that on start up but not for very long and not badly. Now it smokes on initial start up but that's it, it's stops after a few seconds, its used a little bit of oil and that's it.
Im very very happy !!

But you still see white smoke even after the 595 miles, please keep us updated after you have your first break-in service to see if it still smokes. All techs have told me that this will stop after the first break-in Service ... one tech even let me see the bulletin from Ducati that went out to all Dealerships

300 miles and no sign of any smoke 'at all'.

Saying that, doesn't appear to have used much, if any, oil either (although it is a complete pain to read level accurately). Torch app on iPhone comes in handy.

Demo model at my dealer smoked a lot. I also got a letter on handover from dealer explaining about the smoke issue, although don't have it to hand.

Is this a problem in the past for Ducati bikes or its becuz of a new engine design......

Hey Flyn, not till the end of the month. Looking forward to hearing your opinions! Did you pick yours up today?

It has never been a problem on Ducati before. I've had many new ducs and never have they smoked or used oil.

so what do you think is the leading cause for this.....this shouldn't be a mystery knowing Ducati has produced top quality bikes.

It seems to me the smoke is worse if you leave the bike alone for 2 or 3 days, but it certainly improved after the first 500 kms, I had the first service done on Monday lets see if I get any tomorrow, if I remember I will take a vid of the results

New 916 - no burning oil
New Monster - no burning oil
New Multistrada - no burning oil

The latest and most advanced motocycle developed by Ducati smokes more than Marley and the Wailers all together

You would have to be high not the be a bit nervous

performing an oil change isn't going to make any difference

Well, it looks like the truck isn't going to make it in today. We were all pretty sure it would be here but no call yet. Maybe tomorrow.

My Tri did exactly what you see on that video on the first start up, I know because it was next to an open patio window and stank the house out! It never did it again.

Done 265 miles now, is been sat for four days unused too, still no smoke. Told by the dealer to check the oil level every 180 miles until the first service and so far the level looks no different from new. He also told me it was essential to run it in correctly while it beds in. I'll keep you posted, 600 miles service booked in for 10 days time. Better get some better weather!

Exactly the same behaviour as my Tric.

No smoke, no oil consumption.

So what I want to know is, why the hell are some smoking on every start up and some aren't smoking at all????

How the hell are you supposed to accept that as normal when they're doing different things????

Letter from Ducati to Dealers, dated 10/04/12.

Dear Dealers,

the superquadri engine is extremely sporty and as you already know is equipped with a new piston and cylinder heat system and large piston diameter of 112mm. It is necessary for this engine to be run in appropriately to allow adjustment of the mechanical components and also the correct seating of the piston rings.

Particularly during the running in period, corresponding to the usual 1000km/600 miles (deadline provided with onboard instrumentation), it may be that the oil consumption and exhaust smoke are higher than average, but without this being a problem with the engine in question. Running in and the gradual settling of the components will lead to a rapid reduction of the engine lubricant to normal values. Therefore it is recommended to verify the level of the lubricating oil during the running in period, approximately every 300km/180 miles (for the correct level see page of the owners manual).

Please explain to your customers during the delivery of the bike, with the expertise and proffessionalism that distinguishes you, also this feature of the 1199 Panigale in order to allow them to fully appreciate the sporty qualities.

Best regards,

Conclusion....
It's so 'sporty' some smoke and burn oil, and some don't. Make sure you convince your customers this is 'normal'.

My thoughts...
It would be nice if quality control gave the same or similar results with every bike.
