More on the smoking issue

Have you used 195HI mode yet? Just wondering if the non-linear, softened throttle response from the sport mode might have something to do with it. Would be like a long-turn throttle until you have it nearly pinned.

Sorry to do this but I'm heading out of town for the weekend and will not get another chance to ride, respond, or report till next week.

Have fun and don't worry about my ramblings, Ill bet that most of you don't feel the same way and you'll love your bike.

No we want to hear them.....you have a vast amount of bike experience most people only dream of so would be good to see more comparisons considering.

I've had my 1199s since last Saturday. I saw it at the dealer right after they prepped it beforet the unveil on Friday the 27th. They started it up for me and man, did it smoke. I mean a lot. It smoked a lot when I started it up to leave the dealer Saturday night too. When I started it Sunday morning, it smoked, but a lot less than at the dealer and only on the initial start up. Rode it for about 100 miles Sunday. Started it up Tuesday night, smoked, but even less than it did Sunday. Took it out last night and I didn't notice much smoke at all on the initial start and nothing throughout the ride. It has a little over 130 miles on it now. If the rain holds off tonight, I'm taking it out again and I'll let you know what I see.

The dealer started the S that's on display in the showroom. It smoked but it quickly went away. The smell of burning oil did linger for a while though.

This bike had the full Termi system on it and damn was that thing loud. I couldn't believe it. I don't plan on a full system right away if ever so I hope just having the slip-ons will be at least close.

I just got in from another 30 mile ride. Started it up cold (and it is about 49 degrees where I am) and no smoke at all. Have about 160 miles on it after tonight's ride. So, my 1199 went from smoking a lot on the first few starts last week to nothing now on a cold start. Anyone else having similar experience?

Hey Castle how are you breaking the bike in? Rev up quick and engine breaking above or below 6000rpm?

So far it has been all under 6000, with one quick shot up to about 7000. opening the throttle a decent amount. Running through all the gears, some engine breaking from 6000 down. I I've been running in each gear from low revs (mid 3000 rpms) up to the 6000 rpm mark when I can. Tonight was the first time I got it to 6th gear from around 4000 RPM's close to the 6k mark.

Tomorrow is the big day...:D
Picking up my TRI...

I'll let you know if it smokes or if it's lame...;)

...I think I won't sleep tonight...

Mine was burning oil when started with cold motor for the first seconds. I can produce smoke by quick and short opening the throttle after starting. Nothing happens when the motor is warmed up.

So, picked it up at noon today on a rainy day...
Doesn't bother..., I kept smiling for all the 100 miles ride...:D

I definitely don't have the track experience of bulldog,
But in my mind, this thing is far from lame...!
And I even didn't touch the RACE mode... (was pouring rain like crazy)
And for the smoke issue, it's pretty much like Otto is saying...

I wasn't able to sleep last night, and I think I won't sleep more tonight either.

My dealer said to check the oil every 100 miles.

It's 180miles (300km) as per the memo that Ducati NA sent to all dealer,
The same memo that explained the smoke issue.
But honestly, I believe it wont drink that much oil.
Yeah, it's possible some will need more and some won't need any oil fill-up during break-in.
They are probably only protecting themselves against stupid moron not looking at their oil gauge...and exploding their engine...!
You should pay attention to oil consumption on ALL bikes during their break-in process...
And maybe the testasquadra is more incline to consume.

After 130 miles, smoke is almost gone,
This afternoon I went for a small ride around town, and it smoked for 20-30 sec after I started it...and that was it...
I think tomorrow, it'll all be gone...!

You're a braver man than me...there's no way I would have ridden a brand new bike in the rain - getting it dirty so soon after delivery would drive me crazy!

Yeah, I would wait to pick it up too. I didn't make that choice with my 1198 and regretted it. It was cold and rainy the whole way home (about 80 miles, 128 kms), my joints were frozen. And my mild self-diagnosed OCD required a full wipe down and wax when I did get home. But to each their own.
