Hi, just wondered if anyone might have had a similar problem?
New to me 1299, first start of any day, tries to fire but doesn’t quite go, sometimes pops a little backfire, occasionally does start but often drains the battery. Also sometimes just clicks with no turnover.
Hot starts seem to be better. I also sometimes get a INTERTIAL SENSOR! Error.
Fitted a new battery, no better.
I wondered, if the owner before me had fitted Akrapovic silencers (no knowledge of this) and remapped then refitted original silencers before selling (standard are on the bike) could this cause the problem?
Many thanks in advance,
Andy

Hi there Andy,
Clicking with no turnover is low battery Voltage.

Internal Sensor error ive seen happen when driving in the wet, these bikes dont seem to like that, ive gotten internal sensor and speed sensor errors from this before, likely not related to your starting issue.

Hard starting..oh boy...this is pretty common, some things to consider:

has your charcoal canister been removed (right side of bike)? These getting choked up with fuel runoff contributes to hard starting, so remove that if not done so. Smog block off plates can be purchased and installed along with canister removal, or just cap the lines to the throttle bodies instead: AIS Valve Removal kit with Block Off plates PLE-114

Mapping will fix this issue, if pervious owner had the bike tuned, and put it back to stock before you purchased it, then yes your issue could have come back. if your fully stock exhaust now, and stock mapping, ya your gonna have hard starting issues. You could ask the dealer to ensure you have the latest rev for your ECU from ducati...if your a < 2017 model, you need this done i think,

Fresh spark plugs makes the bike start better

Lithium battery is stronger than stock, mine surly starts better with lithium over stock acid battery. Amazon product ASIN B07DNH5DQD
Good luck man, wishing you the best,
JAG

Hi. Thanks JAG,
Sounds like my bike might need a remap to look at the feeling at startup maybe.
New battery is another Lithium & full so maybe I’ll check the wiring connections to the starter motor? Perhaps the starter is starting to fail.
Should’ve mentioned she’s a 2016 and a UK bike so I don’t think it’s got the charcoal filter?
Will keep at it. Thanks again.

Hey, Andy. The bike won't start properly in February! Maybe April, 15 degrees and the sun shining. Seriously, good luck with the problem, loving my 1299 base, great fun to ride, and a real 'occasion' on every outing. Dave

Thanks Dave, could be just an Italian thing eh, no cool weather rides! I managed to get her going today after a while and went for a blast, totally agree awesome bike 👍

How many miles are on the bike?

What makes you think there's a different map? Does it show Racing EVO on the dash when you turn the key to on?

Hi, about 18000miles, pretty sure it’s been on track before due to some of the mods.
I’m jus guessing on the remap trying to figure out why it’s so hard to start, doesn’t show racing evo on dash though.
I tired her again today after give the bike a good shake to mix up the tank and it fired straight up so maybe there’s some water in the tank as I read on another post.

Use MOTOLECTRIC leads, you will start much easier.
Have these on 1198SP & 1299S, both bikes start easily now, unlike before.
The original battery leads are absolutely useless as cannot handle the current draw when winding over engine to start.

I always have problems starting in cold weather. I realized that it is the battery voltage that drops due to the colds and there is simply not enough juice to start the bike. One solution I have found is to turn on the bike and let the electronics/lights warm up the battery cells for 5 min. Then try to start the engine. Works most of the times.

just get a lithium battery yall...$100 on amazon, and replace it every 2-3yrs....they do not like the hot texas temps, but the CCA are much better for the bike.
