My 1299s Experience so far

I picked up my 1299s on 5/8/15 from the nice guys at Garcia Moto in Raleigh, NC. One of the busiest dealerships I have been to but they answered and addressed every question I had.

So for the review:

I love the bike. Its phenomenal, raw, inspiring. Coming from the S1000RR that I never really connected to; It's a welcome and humbling experience. The BMW is easy and modest to ride until you get it past 9,000rpms and then it goes. With the Ducati....you know the power is there, its a red devil under your balls.

My 848 and 1098 felt bloated compared to the 1299. The panigale is loud. It's the loudest stock motorcycle I have ever owned, maybe including the bikes that I have switched the exhaust on. I have no plans to pay $5,000 for the Akra system at this time. I am pleased.

I haven't or really wanted to mess with the electronics yet, however I will later on this weekend. I will add some more to this.


Cons:

The 1299 has stalled worse than my 1098 ever thought about doing, I figured as much when I bought it. I know the quirks of buying Duc's so I can only hope it gets better. It has put me in a couple of dangerous situations twice so far.

The heat on the right side of my leg is bad at times. Luckily I have found a solution. It will dissipate if I go faster. :D

Glad you're enjoying the bike. It's a bit loud but not obnoxious, I think they struck a good balance with it - I always wear earplugs anyway.

The bike does stall when idling too much, some of the guys here say that gets better after the 600 mi service (and perhaps idle speed adjust?) Are you deleting the carbon canister? Supposedly makes starting easier

The heat is an issue sitting in traffic or at long stoplights but I try to avoid both

I haven't had a SINGLE issue of my bike stalling, not one. I wonder if the idle is set too low on your bikes, or something? Have your dealers done the latest updates to your ECU?

P.S. to the OP, I completely agree with almost everything you said about the S1000RR, but I would add that the weight difference between the S1000RR and the 1299 feels shocking to me; it's theoretically only around 30 lbs, but it feels like much more... you can feel it in every aspect of the bike, from the handling to the braking...

P.P.S. I removed the charcoal canister before I even started it for the first time.. Maybe THAT'S the reason?

I think the charcoal can has something to do with hard starts and stalling, mine will be deleted this weekend, dealer refused to do it for me

The 30lbs is definitely noticeable, it doesnt just tip in faster...it dives!

I believe you are right about the charcoal canister, I am not aware of any ECU updates. I havent looked into where its located on this bike or the best way to remove it. Any helpful info would be appreciated if you could PM me!

Do you still feel painful heat if you're wearing leathers? I only feel like the heat is bad if I'm wearing jeans (Kevlar, supposedly, whatever).

I wish the bike were a bit louder. I'll order the Termi slip-on if I hear any more positive reviews about it.

I find the s1000 incredibly easy to ride. Oddly I did not think so about the HP4, which is basically the same bike -- go figure. But the 2015 rr used at California Superbike school is a cinch! No character though, and doesn't tie in as easily. Also, quick shifter is not as good as Ducati.
 
Oh yeah, my 1299s has never stalled, not once. I have about 500 miles on it and the carbon canister is intact.

"tie in"? Must be turn in

I'm not worried about the (very occasional) stalling at idle, probably a break in or idle speed issue

My bike has 160 miles on it. It has stalled crossing an intersection 3 times, going down the road abuptly in 1st gear at 5k rpms (luckily I was covering the clutch) but mostly after its warm and I restart it. A total of about a dozen times. I dont let my bike warm up more than a minute.

Im pretty sure removing the canister will resolve these issues.
 
i found with all my Ducatis, they tended to stall if I rode them within 1 minute of starting them..

With my 1199s, I wait till engine temp is 60 or higher and ride off. Apparently some have stated this is not good for the bike to wait that long , but I have had no stalling since adapting to this method.

(PS- I also had the charcoal canister removed )
 
Bigger pistons do take longer to get to temp or you can get piston scuffing and partial cold seizure, so at the very least I ride really easy for the first several minutes, but I don't think idling in the driveway for an excessive period is a good idea either
 
I dont let my bike warm up more than a minute

Modern engines do not need a warm up period before you use it. Just keep to the rev limit (will start out low and increase progressively to maximum as she warms up). :cool:
 
I simply wanted to share my experience, maybe it will help others...maybe not.

I dont let the bike get 200 degrees or thrash on it as soon as I hop on. Ducati has responded to an inquiry about how long to let the bike warm up.

I will also use premium grade unicorn blood as oil. I dont care what others do. I do as I please.
