Last week i drove my bike to the motogp races using a cargo van I rented from budget. No problems during the 800-mile trip to Kansas City to Austin, TX and will probably do it again next year. Here are some of the details which may be helpful.
The vehicle is a Ford Transit 150: Budget Truck Rental
Cost me $415 total for 9 days and unlimited mileage. Cargo van is comfortable and easy to drive, there is a power outlet in rear if you need it.
Strapping down the bike was pretty straight-forward. There is plenty of room for your bike and all of your extras. I probably over-planned with the many tie-downs since the road was mostly straight and flat from Kansas City to San Antonio, not alot of bumps, not alot of stop and go. I'm from SATX so I had a place to stay and a garage for the bike everyday.
Closer look at the equipment, the ramp is not very wide but long and sturdy, rated at 750#. No trouble backing the bike out but probably could use a spotter going up.
Front Wheel Chock is very useful and doesn't have to be bolted down, I looped around a couple of straps to keep it planted and put a full container in front of it just in case; kept the bike upright and steady.
The straps are Keeper easily my favorite ratchet tiedowns, the Pro Taper tiedowns are good for a cam buckle, I used these extensions, and I can't recommend the Ancra because one broke on the way down (the bucket failed). Also I used these LuckyBike front and rear since they are local I visited their shop. The handlebar setup is easy but I can't quite figure out the back.
I think it is very worthwhile to bring your bike down, I rode all over town, the family got to see the 1199, I rode it on the track, and I got to commute daily on the tollway.
