Wondering if any of you guys can make a connection with what the issue is.

I brought in my Panigale 899 to change out the race water pump wheel set which is made out of plastic gears and they wear down and get into your oil...WTF Ducati? I purchased a metal set built to replace that system. Since the clutch cover casing was going to be removed for the work, I decided to get a 959 clutch cover so I can install a Woodcraft clutch cover/slider. Also changed out the clutch plates. That was the only work done.

When I picked up the bike, only got about a mile and the temp was over 230. Brought the bike back and had them take a look. Coolant was leaking. So the bike now has this new issue.

My question is this, how could a coolant issue happen with the above work done? There were absolutely no issues with cooling system before I brought the bike in. I can't figure out how this could have happened.

The water pump may not have sealed correctly. Or any of the coolant hoses that were removed may need to be tightened. Or the coolant idler gear didn't get installed... many possibilities

I have not held the 2 parts in my hand and seen for myself but I was told yesterday that different models have covers with a different clearance for the idler??? The guy said that he had to have his machined so it would go on and said that if it was the other way around the idler could fall off?

Even if that is true if that metal idler fell off it would be getting ate up by the clutch basket or gear n gotta believe you woulda heard it

Good luck and plz keep us posted

I'm sure everything will be revealed when the cover is removed for inspection.Keep us posted.

Will post an update when I know. The main question; is the shop responsible for fixing the issue without charging me? This is the part:

I would hope its under warranty. They may try and weasel out of it by saying parts are not standard parts?Your description sounds to me that the coolant pump was not being turned after the job was done.A less than obvious cause could be the little steel pin missing/not aligned with your new pump drive gear and your existing pump shaft resulting in the gear being rotated-but not the pump.

Dude quite a few people including me have these gears installed. I did job myself and had no problem with fitting them to my bike not to mention no problems with cooling or coolant leak.
Now obviously you don't know that by installing these gears you're not opening cooling system at all! So are you sure your bike has the leak, was your bike overheating and blowing coolant out of overflow bottle...!? If you have overheating engine it may not be related to the water pump gear, it could be caused by air pocket in the system...
So take few steps back and wait and see what is the problem and what caused the same.

Yeah, exactly. So if it was cooling properly before it would be cooling properly now (if the pump was still turning)

He said it went straight to 230°

Yes, but we don't know what was done, opened up etc during instalation... did shop remove oil cooler ( recomended by service manual) or not... I have hard time to believe factory tech will forget that pin or not pay attention is everything it in it's place before putting cover on. Anything is possible.

Thanks, that might be a good place to start.

That is correct. There were no issues with cooling except the normal heat of the Panigale (217 max on a hot day). After I picked it up, it shot up to 230+ going about a mile. There were no leaks or issues with the cooling system.

Replaced my plastic Audi pump gears last month did not touch the water pump but did a flush and new race coolant burped the system a few times before it was air free .
It may just be a coincidence .Or as Zero said they fuc$ed something up .

I reread the original post and realized that I misread slightly. I assumed water pump and gears were replaced. So, you can ignore the part regarding water pump not sealing ( I replaced my pump with the updated part number fyi). But, I did remove the small hose going to the oil heat exchanger so the coolant system was opened, thus requiring it to be refilled. I don't think getting the engine cover off without doing this would be reasonably easy.

Anyway, its all pretty good speculation but in the end this can't be answered online/remotely.

You don’t huh?

Where are the rear brake lines? Looks like this was done during other work? My bike with ABS had lines going across the top of the cover. Oh, and I have an 1199s Tricolore with full race exhaust. I had to remove exhaust partially and I think the right side foot rest bracket. If I remember correctly I couldn't access those lower bolts otherwise.

Added note: the bolts are of different lengths. Pay attention to which ones are longer!!

Don... I'll need you to do all my bike work. You make it look too easy!!
