Hello all, I need some advice. Im wiring up a device on a yoke mount. I need the ele supplied only when the bike is on. Other than directly wiring it to the battery with a fuse, is there any way I can wire into something else. I have all the fairings off and thinking about one of the fuse boxes but I dont want to screw anything up. I could do the direct battery but i would have to turn the device off everytime i shut the bike off. Thats why im looking for another way. Thanks for any insight SPM

Mate I can see warranty issues and drama with all the electronic wizardry on this bike if you do the shody piggy back method.

I would seek the advice of a good auto elec or just go straight to the battery with a fuse and isolation switch to be safe.

Good luck with it and please let us know how it pans out for you.:)

I attached a DC plug (cigarette lighter) to the battery, when I'm not using it I unplug whatever device I'm using with no drain :D.

The simpliest way, is a relay taking a feed off of either the headlight or parking lights. That's what I did for the driving lights on my beemer.

Ditto - have done the same on my BMW. With the canbus systems on these bikes you only want to pull as little amperage as you can from a circuit. That is why you want to pull power from a light as Trauma said just to trigger the relay, and pull power to run though the relay to power the device from the battery directly.

I put a radar detector on my Ducati last week and just used power directly from the SAE connector that they install for use with a battery tender. Like you, I don't like the fact that I have to turn it off when not in use so I plan to install a relay for it soon.

If you check the back of your operators manual there is a schematic for your bike. You can wire a relay that will switch power when the key is in the on position.
From the schematic identify V key + 12 (key power), V battery + 12 (battery power) and GND (ground). You should see all of these and where they connect either at the battery or the fuse block or item 3 on the schematic (e lock relay)
If you use a standard Bosch style relay it is pretty easy to wire. Find the terminals numbered 85 and 86 (across from each other) this is the relay coil where you will attach the ground wire to one terminal and the key power to the other terminal. At the 30 terminal connect fused power from the battery. At the 87 terminal connect a wire that will go to the device you want to turn on and off with the key.

Thanks, this is obviuously the best place, I will save this and do it when I have some time.
