Hi All,
I've been lurking here for a few days and getting to grips with the 1199s "features" from real life users rather than the bike journalists on You Tube videos.
Nothing too scary for me to think about taking the plunge on a 1199S Tricolore next Spring.
I used to own a 996S and a 748R so I am well aware of the need to know your bike inside and out and especially go over all of the key bolts with loctite as soon as you get it ! ! !
Unfortunately the recent recession forced a very reluctant sale of both of them.
Still, at least it allowed them to be used and enjoyed rather than being stuck in my Father-in-Laws garage in England waiting to get enough money to ship them over here and handle the reams of red tape.
As we all plod out of recession it's time to get back on a bike.
I'm weighing up whether to buy brand new and be the first owner or go for a low mileage used bike with Termi's and any tasteful bling that the previous owner chose to add.
It'll come down to what's available next March/April and what the deals are like.
I'm not keen on paying $28k for a brand new one unless they throw in Termi's, a few bits of carbon and a rear stand - what are the kind of deals that you've heard about/received for a new bike? I'm not particularly tied to any location/dealer so pretty much anywhere from Wisconsin down to Florida but the bike will likely stay in Florida and be ridden at weekends as the roads and weather are much more amenable.
$20k-$22k for a tricked up low mileage used model would seem to be the going rate.
So, what are your opinions on whether to go new or used?
Ducati's are bikes that should always have been revered and therefore I would expect any seller to have treated it like a member of the family and to be as reluctant as I was when I had to give up my 996S and 748R. Therefore i'd expect a used bike to be in excellent condition, run in, and just happen to have a few costly extras already on it. Oh, and any factory recalls/upmaps to have been done already.
Still, there's nothing like knowing you are the first owner of a brand new bike, is there? That it has been yours and yours alone.
If you thought it through with your head it's a no-brainer - go used and save the money . . . but then if I thought it through with my head I wouldn't be contemplating spending $20k-$30k on a bike that I'll ride a couple of thousand miles a year on.
Oh, one last question. The clutch on the 996S and 748R used to be very heavy which was quite literally a pain on super nadgery bits like Snakes Pass in the UK. An Evoluzione slave cylinder made twisty bits a lot more enjoyable.
What is the clutch like on the 1199? Has anyone needed to change the slave cylinder?
Cheers,
Sammo
