That's probably the one piece of advice I wouldn't heed. Generally almost everyone will consider a kimber 1911 > sig 1911.
Now if you are recommending a different sig - then you have other issues. Most of the better sigs ( elite 226/220 etc ) are not legal in California.
Kimber and sig are two different markets. Sig makes an excellent production gun. Kimber makes a close to the top of the line semi custom 1911. You can customize the grip, sights, magwell, barrel, safeties etc on the gun you want. Not so much with Sig. There are a few semi-custom makers even greater than kimber (Wilson, ed brown, nighthawk) and a bunch of pure custom guys but that's another discussion.
Anyhow between kimber and sig - better to have both but I definitely wouldn't choose sig over the kimber. But if you are using it once a year and don't need/want it for personal protection I would get funds for it.
