So what mileage are you guys running between oil changes?

Manual says every 7500 mi. but that seems pretty absurd (and dealer told me that I'd really want to do it more frequently than that).

Changed it at 3800 mi (3100 since 1st svc) and the oil was pretty black. Now another 3500 until 7500 mi schedule svc and I'm thinking I'm going to change it at around the 6k mark.

What about the rest of you. At what intervals are you changing it?

i change mine depending on use. i actually had to add half of quart cause i was low but i will do a full change when i store the bike. if i run track days i will change more frequent. the old 3000 mi rule is out the window with these new synthetics.

I'm doing basically the same I think. I just changed it at 2900 and will do it again somewhere around 5500 or so. Then the dealer will do it at the 7500 so I won't have to do it again until around 10k.

very good choice of race oil. smells like bananas.

As bow said race use only changes everything.

read till your eyes bleed www.bobistheoilguy.com.

10w40 amsoil debating switching to 20w50 or motul 15w50

I change at app. Every 1000 kms or so. Race use only

Motul 300V 15-50

Track only : so do i .... 1000KM ... will post the brand but it only cooks at 250°C i'm told.. with the small cooler , that sounds not a bad thing...

That would be good for you to try Amsoil MCV.
Then you can report back about any differences you notice in shift feel or engine drag. It would be useful information to draw from.
FYI the Amsoil MCV stays shear stable for the 50 part of the equation, but at the 20w part it shears down to a 15w fairly quick and stays there for the duration.
It effectively becomes a rock solid 15w-50 oil:)
Ask me how I know:D

Cheers

I do mine at 6000 Kms.
In the Streetfighter it's looking pretty black by the time it gets to about 4500 Kms, and very black at 6000 Kms. So I change it because I can't stand to look at it like that:(
Even though used oil analysis says that it's still well and truely fit for purpose.

In the 1199 the oil still looks very good in the lead up to the 6000 Km oil change, and just by looking at it you could be tempted to go the 12000 Kms on it.
But because it's a top line bike, I still change early at 6000 Kms.

5300km. Never had to top up. Oil still looking good.
I haven't looked yet but u assume you can change the oil yourself.

Remove lower fairing to access the drain bolt?
Remove side fairing to access the oil inlet?

What about the oil filter? You guys change that too each time you change your oil?

I change my oil more frequent than the manual recommends, but replace my oil filter at every other oil change. So if I change every 3,000... lets say I replaced my oil and oil filter at 3,000, my next oil change will be at 6,000. At 6,000 I will just drop the oil and not replace my oil filter. In the next oil change which will be 9,000 that is when I will replace my filter...

I replace my oil filter after every other oil change interval.

I might adopt this too. It would be a whole lot easier to skip the filter and I wouldn't waste so much aluminum foil. :)

So let me see if I've got this right.
You've got one of the most highly developed motorcycle engines' that DUCATI has put into its top line bike, and you're worried about a filter and a bit of foil:confused:

Not really, there was a smiley at the end. :)

To be honest it wasn't that bad. Last weekend I did the filter, O-rings, new crush washer and oil. Having done it once it will be a piece of cake next time. The first time it's scary though. Scary removing that little cover and scary removing the old filter since I didn't quite get the instructions that somebody posted until I looked at the new filter and realized that rubber end bit pushes in and you can grab it with the end of a screwdriver or pliers.
