Oil sensor seal problem

On the right side of the 1199 through V4 series of engines there is a small passage coming out the end of the crankshaft, which allows oil to travel to the oil pressure sensor on the side of the engine. The shaft has a 14mm stub just outboard of the main crank gear, and this mates with a seal that is imbedded in side cover for the engine. Inside the recess behind this seal is a passage that goes to the oil pressure sensor. When I pulled the side cover off the engine I found that the lip of the seal was torn and most of it had disappeared, rendering an incomplete seal. This seems to be a point of possible oil pressure loss, which may cause oil starvation at the rod or crank bearings due to the oil following the path of least resistance and flowing out the end of the crankshaft, past the bad seal, and back to the crankcase instead of being forced to the bearings or top end of the engine. The clearance of the seal, without the rubber lip, is about .15mm, the shaft being 14mm and the inside of the metal part of the seal being about 14.3mm. That's a very large gap, and I'm sure a lot of oil could bypass the rest of the engine through it.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and have any engine failures been attributed to the damage/failure of this seal? My engine has about 28,000 miles on it, and I would never have found this except that I was changing the water pump drive gears to steel to avoid a future failure of the stock plastic gears. So, it seems to be a catastrophe waiting to happen, and may actually be the cause of bearing failures due to lack of sufficient flow or pressure at higher rpm.
