Just had an oil service and had to remove approx 250ml of oil when i got home as the Ducati dealership had overfilled it. So far I have had 3 services and on two occasions (different Ducati dealerships) the bike has been over filled by 250ml.

Have I been unlucky or is this a common problem.

Before asking I checked the oil level after the bike had cooled down overnight.

Are you sure your bike was straight up when you looked at the level window?
Even minor tilts can influence the level, a lot.
Better do it when the bike is on a stand.

Yes I checked it a few times to make sure. Just seems odd that I have experienced this twice and on both occasions had to remove 250ml.

Even Anti-hero on the ADV Forums had his overfilled and that was two years ago! I'll keep my eye on mine as I am going in for the 600 mile oil change next week.

If one puts in the full 3.7 litres that DUCATI say it's supposed to take, it will be indeed be overfilled by about 250 ml.

If one takes the trouble to evacuate the scavenging pump when doing the oil change. It will probably only be about 175 ml over full.

I personally only put about 3.5 litres in since making this mistake on my first 1199 oil change, and it works out about perfectly inline with the top line on the sight glass the next day, when I check the oil level and it's dead cold.
It's always much easier to have to add a little oil, than it is to remove any of it;)

It's not that big of a deal having it slightly over filled, especially if your going to be wringing it's neck. When the engine is running at high rpm the oil level in the sump would scare you. Besides they have a breather.

I don't know how they do it att the dealer. But the first time we changed the oil and filter on our bike, we just filled her up with the 3,7l that is stated in the service manual... And that turned out to be too much.. We had to take out about 200ml afterwards... So now we only fill her up with about 3,4-3,5 liters after an oil change, and that about does the trick...

Maybe the were sloppy at the shop and just poored in the stated ammount in the service manual, without checking the level properly afferwards...
