Oil tank paint

Hi!

I took my bike to change the plastic water pump threads to metal ones and once I got my bike back, I found that some paint had gone... See picture.
The garage said that's a known problem from Ducati and it happened when they cleaned with inside and sealing with hot water.
Could it be the real reason?
They're willing to fix it with some home made mix of paint.

I'm afraid they will make it worse than better...
Does anyone has the specs for this golden-ish paint?

Is it paint or powdercoat? Im pretty sure it hasn't got a clear coat, but in any case Id be looking at a ceracote product and do the whole cover because you wont match it or make it look good if you try and touch it up.

Also, you need to prep the case properly by removing all the oil residue and possibly use something like alodine if you're going to paint

You could hit it with some brake parts cleaner or acetone on a blue shop towel to degrease. I don't know if $75 per quart of Alodine makes much sense.

There was a member here who got a Cerakote applicator to make a custom blend and spray some parts, but I don't think it was all too cheap. H series Cerakote requires a bath in acetone, sandblasting to etch the surface and oven baking. Being that it's the right side engine cover, that's a significant amount of down time. It may be cheaper to order another cover.

Good point, just touch it up and carry on...
 
I don’t think there were any changes to the right side engine cover between the 1199 and 1299, but you’d have to compare the part numbers or check them in person.

And then followed up on it and turns out that’s not the right match for modern engine covers.

Your “contribution” is for frame and wheel paint for the 916-996 era stuff and therefore is worthless to this conversation. If anything it confuses more than helps 👍
