Hi... I got my bike back from dealer after first service. 24hrs later, I find the sight glass filled to the top. Called dealer to enquire. Was told if the level is good after bike is off for 2hrs then it's fine. Gets higher as the bikes sits 24hrs. Is this accurate?

You are not supposed to check the level for up to two hours after the bike shut off. I have never heard of the glass being full then dropping after two hours. If you checked the level after the bike had been sitting and it to the top of the glass it is over filled.

Happened to me and others, why its important to check your oil level yourself and not to blindly trust a shop like Moondognyc does.

It’s “common” for Ducati dealers to overfill their bikes?? What are we saying here? What?? I doubt it is common at all.
Who are the dealerships? Are you one of those guys that just make these types of statements that could lead to catastrophic results, and not mention who the dealership is? So three different dealerships over filled three different v4R’s. ?
Yeah ok. Seams plausible. Lofl.

Its been my past experience with dry sump systems that

1. they for various reasons do not always read the same after an oil change - at different times checked . Probably due to various reasons , exact time - engine temp- , type of riding done, etc etc.

2. a dry sump appearing to read a little over the top line is not a big deal - and possibly better than maybe under filling - not enough oil.

My experience is based on MX bikes so it may not be the same- may not apply

I tend to measure my oil when doing oil changes it removes doubt , and takes away the trust in that silly line based on level of the bike and how good I can balance a MC while looking at a sight glass

OP has an overfilled crankcase - its that simple - drain some out, or pull some out from the top with a turkey baster/some hose - between the hash marks is a good rule of thumb - "after 2.5hrs" ;)

I drained it. In between two lines now. Couldn't get oil out by fill opening. Had to do it at the drain. Needless to say I will be doing my own oil changes from now on.

Bike needs to be upright in order to easily pull oil from the fill hole. Simply use a spray bottle top with built in straw (i.e washed Windex or similar spray bottle).

I got a brake fluid vacuum that I use for stuff like this. But I just couldn't reach the oil. Never had issue of doing it before but this one just would not reach. Tried different size tubing but no luck.

I over filled mine once and tried all of those tricks they didn't work for me either. Like you I just pulled the drain bolt a little to drain.

The V4 of all of the bikes I have owned has been the most difficult to get the oil level correct. I usually make sure I have a full day to double check before riding.

Interesting. I’m 1k after my first service. Just checked the level (after being stationary for 18 hours), and it was 5 or 6mm above the max marker.

That wouldn’t be enough to cause an oil churn/froth on cranking would it?

dry sump systems have an oil tank this oil tank has a large open void at the top for oil froth to turn back into settled oil. If you were to overfill your bike so much that you filled the external oil tank then the sump would start to fill up . at this point the oil would foam up from the crank whipping it into a froth and oil would come out of the breather.

You never want to overfill a wet or dry system .

IMO the difference is that there is more room for overfilling in a dry sump

Also IMO checking the dry sump requires following the instructions . I assume the bike cannot be ridden and must be idled to to temperature because all MX bikes require this
