PSA: Potential Brake Hose Failure

Dude,

I was being tongue in cheek about it and referencing a previous post concerning the use of approved fluids. The manual keeps pointing to Shell Oil products.

The bolt does not need locktite as the nut is one of those that has the nylon at the end. What do they call those things, ny-lock nuts or some such thing?

Lock nut ;)

Good find, I can see this happening...but I checked mine and "casual" riders like myself only have a tiny, tiny dimple if that. :) Still, temp fix until first maintenance, thanks again.

I noticed the potential for this a few days ago and posted a thread suggesting people check their bikes. I simply slit a small piece of hose about 1/2 inch long and wrapped it around the resevoir line right where it rubs against the screw. I also made mention of this to my dealer.

Efna, looks like a good solution. How thick is the hose you used? What type of hose? By any chance, did you pick-it up at Home Depot or Lowes? Thanks.

You deffinetly chose a great name! Did you get the second tricolore from Munroe?

I've only got 1 tri, not sure what you mean by "second" tri? I got mine from Hattar. I've now had a few people ask me when I got mine...has there been some recent missed delivery dates from local dealers here? Hattar was pretty good at keeping me informed of the initial delays from bologna and were spot on with the actual delivery date when it finally arrived.

I agree with Efna's later posts that shortening the screw is the only real fix. No sense in futzing around with other solutions when it can be fixed readily and easily and with such serious consequences otherwise. It'll take the shop less than a min if you don't have the right tools.

I was a piece of 1/4" (inside diameter) vaccum line that I had sitting in the spare parts drawer in my tool chest.

I must admit to thinking that it seemed sort of sacrilegious putting cheap automotive vaccum hose on what is so obviously a work of functional art, but I justified it by knowing that it was in the interest of preserving it's beauty and perhaps my a$$.

Note: Honestly, just file down the bolt and be done with it as it is the better long term solution. I simply chose to delay doing this because I want the dealer/mechanic to see how it is unmodified. After all, when I go in for service they may not have any new ones to look at as a reference. Of course, by then they may already know about it in which case I'll simply ask them to take care of it.

I meant if you got the 2nd overall tricolore from Munroe... But you got yours from hattar! Anyway we should all get a bay area panigale crew together!!

Can anyone take a pic from a wider angle. From the close up pic posted already I can't tell where it exactly is. I want to point this out to my dealer when I pick up my bike in aug.

Ah, got it. Yes mine was the first off a truck of 3 Tris. I think Hattar has had atleast 3 or4 more Tri deliveries since. I'd be down with a bay area group...maybe one of us can post a thread for a bay area roll call and plan a ride?

i have a better solution: this is caused by engine vibration, just keep her above 7,000 rpm at all time :D : no vibration = no cut

Great find chap...I like to strip her down and look her over too, but I missed this.

I really haven't found any other major manufacture defects or instalation flaws...unlike my 1198. All bolts and springs still intact.

Made minor adjustments to Trickle cable and battery bracket from where dealer installation wasn't very tidy or secure.

Another thread make me very currious about the stock pipes tho so I think i'll take a peek :)

Step 1) Identify the master cylinder for the front brake. Hint, it is on the right handlebar. It is white with a black cap. Note that there is a smaller one on the left handlebar but this is not the one you need to look at.

Step 2) Step to the right side of the bike and turn the handlebars all the way to the left.

Step 3) Kneel down and look at the bottom of the master cyclinder (refer to step 1 above). You will see a black rubber hose that is coming out of the bottom of the white part of the master cylinder. If you look closely you can see that the top of this hose is touching the bottom of the bolt that is used to mount the master cylinder to the handlebars.

Thanks for the notes. I'll be sure to check it out.

I bought some 1/2 inch black tubing at Lowes, put a slice down the middle, and it fits perfectly over the brake line. Seems like it will do a great job protecting the brake line from the end of the screw.
