The gear change foot pedal pivots on a bolt, which is a large allen head. Remove that, then you'll separate the pedal from the rear set. Then you can pivot the pedal around and remove the bolt which attaches the quickshifter to the pedal.

well lets go try that now...

no dice - that thing is set tight. Tried anti-clock wise and clockwise just in case it was a reverse nut but its going no where.

Its NOT reverse threaded. There is threadlocker on it from the factory. If you have a heat gun, or a hair dryer and more time, warm it up.

If you're using allen wrenches, its going to be harder. Its better to go out and buy a set of allen head sockets which attach to a 3/8" drive ratchet.

It will come off. It will help if the rearset body is bolted on. I wouldn't try to take it off with the rearset loose.

Thanks BP, rearsets on hold now, fell over getting the hair dryer - wife now driving me to A&E -suspected broken ankle !
Happy New Year huh

Yes, definitely easier if the rearset is bolted to the bike and internal hex sockets make life a lot easier. When I did my quickshifter last week I removed the bolt holding the gear lever to the rearset to remove the gear lever. I then unbolted the clutch slave cylinder so I could get to the bolt holding the other end of the quickshifter on easier. I then removed the whole quickshifter and gear lever while it was still attached, put the gear lever in the vice with soft jaws and undid the quickshifter from the gear lever.

Holy crap, was writing this when you posted that you had taken a fall. Hope your ankle isn't broken!

I guess it will be the usual 3 hours + wait in A&E....would rather be doing my rear sets that's for sure.
Shame you're in brissy, you could come and do mine !!

What a crappy way to spend New Years Day! Good luck, would be happy to help if you were up here...

I have your answer as I just changed my oem qs for my TuneBoy qs.

You have to take the 3 #8 (I think) allen bolts to remove the clutch reservoir (not the clear plastic one up by the lever, but the one where the line ends up down by the shifter).

Where the clutch line ends up that blocks off access to the pivot bolt holding the shifter rod. Remove the 3 bolts, lower the clutch reservoir, and voila! You will not have any clutch fluid come out btw. Just do not touch the line bolt.

Then you will have great access to the #8 (I think) forward pivot bolt holding the shifter rod. The clutch reservoir will be orientated in such a way that you can't really mess it up when you put it back on but do your best not to damage the rod that centers assembly.

Did mine this way and all is fine. Took me 20mins to replace the shifter :)

Oh, this is all in addition to removing the 2 rear set bolts you already had off.

Happy New Year :D

Thanks

yeah Im thinking I'll need to drop the reservoir too and on top of that I need to replace the busted rear brake light sensor from the right hand side.....why are these jobs NEVER straight forward ?

Well after 2hrs in A&E it turns out to be tendon and ligament damage. No riding for a few weeks thats for sure.

Will tackle that ****** gear change rear set today and post pics IF I manage to make progress.

Thanks for all your assistance guys.

Hey guys,
Just trying to remove the shifter foot lever so I can replace it. I have the first allen removed and the lever is hanging, but the freaking allen bolt that has the ball that the lever rotates on is facing the inside of the bike. There is literally no room to fit an allen key or allen driver bit to move it. I cannot rotate the gear change rod enough to get to the backside of it. Any ideas?

Loosen the jam nut on the shifter. The shift rod will be hard to turn, as its Locktite'd in the shifter. It is also reverse threaded.

Twisting it around is the only way to get to it.

Thanks. I noticed when I tried swinging the rod around, the still attached foot lever was hitting the heal guard and supporting plate, so I removed the heal guard and top allen of the plate and swung the whole assembly down. The rod rotating enough on its own to allow top down access to its allen from that position

Okay so the bolt that faces the swing arm that's attached to the smaller whole on the top of the gear shift lever, is the reverse threaded or normal threaded like how do I remove it by turning it counter clockwise or clockwise, because I turned it by loosing the jam nut on the shift rod, so it's facing the opposite side. Rear set is off. I wish I could post picture but the forum is not letting me, not can I see others pictures.

procedures with pictures

bp7178 said it all....

Initially it looked daunting, but not bad at all. It should take no longer than 30 mins to do this.

I am posting this to expand on his guidance with pictures so in the future it will help others even further

Step 1 - remove the rear set

I - unscrew the bolt holding the shifter to the rearset. Remember clearly the sequence of what you are removing. be careful with the rubber seals by not losing them.

II - unscrew the two bolts holding the rearset to the frame

Step 2 - remove the shifter

I - loosen the shaft lenght adjuster screws, so as to pivot the shifter to expse the screw holding the shifter to the shaft

II - unscrew the bolt to the shifter. Uncrew is normal counterclock to loosen.

Use locktite and grease as appropriate to put all screws back. I simply hand tightened.

My front screw (by the QS) came out last week. How do you put the replacement back in and tighten it? I believe it's the clutch slave cylinder that's in the way
