R cylinder/camshaft damage

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I've owned Ducatis since the mid 90's & my first 916...I've broken them all in (about 7 of them) "pretty much" by the book...never had any engine issues, or oil conundrums to deal with..

-- this experience, according to Ducati, is not a break-in cause, but a defective materials situation on "affected bikes"....when I first reported the situation there was another 2015r already having the parts replaced at under 1000 miles (mine had 2500 at the time I reported the situation)....I waited until 6400 miles and simply agreed with their suggestion to replace the parts...watching dripping oil in the parking lot was never fun, although if I did not use the tach fully, as in shift light rev limit shifts, or occasional bangs off the rev-limiter, the blow-by would never find its way out of the airbox (if in fact there was blow-by when not using the tach, just not enough to find its way down the drain tube)...anyway, at this point I'll just wait and see....

Thanks . Good luck with the fix .

These bikes should not have blow by issues . May I ask how did you run the bike in . I don't want to start another debate on the topic just curious .

I ran the bike in on the street up to 900 mile doing spirited canyon rides. It didn't see the track until around 700 miles.

I will be pulling it apart this summer to replace the valves. We will see what the cylinders look like then. I may borescope it sooner than that so I can get prepared.

Part of Ducati's email:

. It is our understanding that the customer has already been coached to remove the fuel tank, clean out the air-box and top up the engine oil as needed after every day of track use.

Are they suggesting having to do this after every trackday?! I mean...it's not difficult...but...really?

what BS, it's a track bike with lights it's made to go fast without these issues.

It has the problem and Ducati stands behind fixing effected bikes...so where is the issue here other than a quality control issue - I hope the next models are free of the "defect" but these are mechanical things, not Holy or Problem Free by any means....never have been

Didn't he say they aren't paying for the labor to fix the bike? If so that is absurd and I would be on the phone with a lawyer if true. All these bikes issues is scary. Praying I stay lucky. Fingers crossed

Well...Ben's still waiting to hear on labor...but I'm happy they're helping with parts. Dropped oil...clean, no particles. Leak-down 15...which I'm told is good...so just camshafts thankfully. Gonna see if I can get my new track bodywork done in time (CCR) to put it back together with that.

Huge thank you to Balz and Ben at Motoforza...can't say enough good about them!

Sounds like if you ride it like a full-on race bike and wring it out hard on the track...racebike maintenance schedules apply....
I'd say that's a given for the rings and cylinders yes. But in my opinion, a camshaft should not wear like that if it's got lubrication. I mean, it's not like the opening ramp on a desmodromic valve camshaft has got the same stress level as it would on a spring closed valve, right?

yes...i think he did...i guess we have to wait and see, but i haven't heard much ever at all, that they would deny a warranty claim when the warranty is truly in effect - i have however heard of bad dealers pushing or testing an owner with bogus/inaccurate statements and pocketing the warranty claim plus dollars paid from customers

- if you think that might be the situation, i would check directly with Ducati NA for a response

Glad to hear it!! You gotta come down to LA and run autoclub speedway with me. It's unreal on these bikes. Hit 171mph last weekend on the straight!!

Sucks to hear about your problems, but they are stepping up a little at least. Typical Italian response from Ducati though :D

What did the top of the piton look like? when I see scuff marks like that it's usually from the piston getting too hot and swelling up too lean/detonation, any VtoP tells?

Im starting to believe that this is just the way of the Ducati... Once you get one that has problems they never seen to stop.. It is one thing after another I recently had the water pump go out on mine with only 6K miles on it Luckily it was literally next door to the Ducati Dealership LOL

Kinda like having a heart attack out in front of the emergency room..

While they were in there I had the mechanic install SAMCO hoses and degree the cams.. Bike still surges constantly at anything below 12% throttle on a steady throttle...

It totally blows to have this beautiful a bike and it isn't even enjoyable to ride... It kind of like being stuck in a REAL BAD marriage with a beautiful wife that is a total bitch.
You got too much invested to get out without losing your shirt but are getting really tired of her .......

Oh well. I dropped mine off at the dealer last Friday and said call me when it is fixed.!!
I'm letting them store in their shop until they can fix it.

It makes me sick to look at it any more and not be able to really enjoy riding it.

Depending on what you do with the bike the rapid bike system can definitely fix your slow speed lunging issues. When i installed mine it was epic how much it changed the characteristics. The system is adaptive so it learns how you ride and how to fuel accordingly. After mine spent 4 or 5 weekends at the track the low rpm range went back to bucking a bit but only above 4K rpms or so. If you ride street only id say it would work wonderfully.

Of the Ducati dealers I've got relationships with, if I told them my brand new R was not running properly...and it was demonstrable to them...and unfixable...I'm confident they would swap it for a new bike. They would not leave me unhappy...IF the bike actually had a problem.
