Last I checked, the Desmo didn't break the Fisherman either. He still won races on the lackluster platform. He did leave Italy after many painful years and immediately win a Championship. How long has this feat taken Rossi?

Let me see if I understand what went thru the Fisherman's mind when he left:
I hate Dorna
I no longer have love for the job
I have a great wife
I have a new child
I'm rich
I have my health...
I can still test for HRC anytime they need me

Seems like a great time to retire to me...

Obviously, you are a Stoner's fan so you have your view.

Also, at the end of the day, you control your life and do what you must like Stoner did as you mentioned above.

Here is my view on Stoner.

Stoner definitely had a talent, just like everyone else who makes it up to MotoGP but he was obviously was one of best of best. But to me, to be a LEGEND, I see him going through hard times and good times, and triumphing. No one can argue that Stoner had at least another 6-8 good years left and to me, he quit. Its not like he is 40...he was STILL young. To me, he is not a LEGEND but just a great rider and won few championships. He if was still riding and competing against best line up, winning few more championships, then would be a legend in my book.

But like most people think...too bad he quit.

Hmmmm QUIT, so I guess that means you consider anyone leaving before a time that is acceptable a quitter? Just trying to understand your logic..

So does retiring make you a quitter?

Well said Young R, Casey Stoner had an amazing gift/ability for me the most fun rider to watch, he was like the new Vallentino bursting on the scene and shaking up the order. And his pairing up with Ducati and Bridgestone was magic. It was a good time to be a Ducati fan, kind of like Schumacher and Ferrari. One thing that some people have forgotten about was the special compound tyres (fronts) that could be cooked up and flown out by Bridgestone for Ducati for every race if need be. Once Moto GP went to the spec tyre it was downhill for Ducati and Stoner, no front feel.
To bad Casey didn't hire a PR man, he came off as a whiney spoiled brat, over shadowing his prodigious talent, he didn't like the game anymore so he gathered up his marbles and went home, he had a chance to become GREAT and remembered for all time by fans around the world, but instead he will just be a footnote about a fast guy that ran for a minute, he won't stand among the greats, by his own choice. He deserted his fans.

leaving before a time that is acceptable

Michael Jordan doesn't meet the above criteria. He's got 6 rings, 2 olympic gold medals, holds a ton of records, defines the "clutch gene," was unanimously respected by his peers, and is widely considered to be the GOAT. His final retirement, I'd say, was considered "acceptable."

I guess what's considered an "acceptable" time to retire is subjective, but you can't really compare MJ to Stoner, IMO.

I am a fan of the sport and saw brilliance in Stoners riding. I think Rossi is a superior tactician and more suited for combat, but watching Stoner live was pretty much like watching Marquez. Absolute Art in Motion. I can take nothing away from Rossi. The man has been pretty much the antagonist of 90+% of the great modern day GP battles. He is a religion to many. He is a Legend. He won championships with two different manufactures. Stoner has also, except one of those was on the untamable Desmo.

If bringing Ducati their first and only GP championship since their GP premier, likely the only Championship they will have for some time, being undefeated on home soil on a factory machine, and winning another title on a second platform doesn't make you a legend, then the real definition of "legend" must not be the one I saw in the dictionary.

Indeed it is, I would not call any Multi time World Level Champion a Quitter for leaving A JOB he is no longer enjoying or wanting to do something else..
As a fan I was kinda butt-hurt about him retiring, same with Bayliss.. Both had years left to compete, but as a grown man I respect their choices.
As for Jordan, based on what was said, he is a quitter, multi time at that.. But still the best basketball player EVER. Waiting for Lebron fans to chime in now.:p

you forgot to add:
my team director was screwing my wife behind my back, and when I moved to Honda, he also moved to Honda. Is my child actually my child?

WHOA I didn't see that in the Star Tabloid Magazine at the check out aisle!

WOW that's something I've never heard before, that must be some inside poop.

Fair enough... Glad to know you think Michael Jordan is a QUITTER also.

?????!!!!! what in the hell does stick, and ball, games have to do with the sport of motorcycle grand prix racing, to paraphrase Hemmingway motor racing, bull fighting and mountain climbing are sports, everything else is just a game.

Not only is that NOT a Hemmingway quote (look it up - Ken Purdy) it's also just stupid. Mad respect and props to ANYONE that works hard to be the best at what they do. Whether it's basketball, motorcycle racing, or curling. Don't be so ignorant.

One you saw on the dictionary must be a thin one because I disagree. Bringing only GP championsihp is due to change in time so thats not a agrument. Biggest defense, Stoner fan have is "untamble" Desmo. There are qualified article and facts about the topic of how one manufactors was great and starts to degrade because ego/dont listen to rider/and etc. By the time Stoner left, bike was on its bad course. Smart man already mentioned that few posts ago. Just like MM with Honda, being invincible for 2 years and having hard time this year with "untamble" Honda until late this year.

It is comic to me how die hard Stoner fans talking about MM last 2 years and putting down VR with all kinds of .... talks (bringing up Stoner again) yet EVERYONE is silent this year about VR as he is number 1 and most likely win the championship. I'm not saying this is you but old members know who those are.
