While I know what you mean... Ferrari is owned buy a company that makes this:
Panda - World

And Lamborghini and Ducati are owned by a company that makes this:
New compact VW up! - Official Site : Volkswagen UK

Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti were all just nameplates "created" by Toyota, Honda, and Nissan so owners could justify the higher cost to themselves because it wasn't a "Honda". It's just a mental thing.

So I'm not sure how much it matters... We are already riding Volkswagons anyway :) lol

Cheap scooters would cheapen the brand. Maybe the scooter will sound cool and be fast?

Ducati sells a lot of Monsters and MultiStradas, in addition to the high end sportbikes.

You miss his point....
You don't see the name Audi, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc etc on ........ cheap scooters or ultra cheap subcompacts. You see it on the VW name. Same goes here- you want to make a scooter you don't cheapen Ducati and put "Ducati" on that scooter is what he's saying. ...Whether I agree with him or you is irrelevant, I'm just somewhat clarifying his point. Whether or not you see my point here.... But I'll share this following feeling I have as well- I refuse to spend $50K on a compact car made by Cadillac because its made by GM. With that $50K I could own a Bimmer, Audi, etc etc midsize sedan equally equipped.

I got his point, my point is just that to me, personally, the label is superficial and more for Starbucks. VW actually had a tremendously good effect on Lamborghini quality, and will on Ducati in time too (which I'm sure you will personally appreciate given your quality problems). I get that brand image matters to a lot of people though. But I'm in the auto industry, and within the same corporate umbrella, I've worked on racing powertrains and the cheapest powertrains possible for the chinese and indian markets. One day I'll work on X brand, the other on Y brand... so knowing that, the badge is more of a superficial thing. VW/Audi will be calling the shots and doing a lot of quality and engineering for Ducati eventually, just as they transformed Lambo... but I get his point, if Lambo had a VW badge on it, it would "cheapen" it too, even though it's the same product...

In regards to the Bimmer and GM comment... what if I told you the same company that designs BMW engines also designs GM ones? Or that BMW actually buys some transmissions from GM for their cars? There are a few engineering consulting companies do much of the engine design for most OEMs...

They may be useful.
The may serve a great purpose.
But...
Scooters are like fat, uhh.... well, you get the point.

Ducati is a high end exotic sport bike manufactor, going into the "scooter market" cheapens and takes the shine off their image and the Brand

I would argue the odds are much greater that going into the scooter market would have the exact opposite effect.

When BMW won Superstock and Kawasaki won Superbike, was the image of a scooter seared into your mind? When Yamaha and Honda were duking it out for the MotoGP championship while Ducati was finishing mid pack, was your one consolation knowing that at least Ducati doesn't produce scooters? I'd say winning and product development have a much greater impact on the public's perception of a company than whether said company happens to offer a scooter in their product lineup.

I think the question this article asks has already been answered.....duh!

Ducati The motoscooter Brio project

Those of you who think scooters dilute the brand should move to BMW..er...Suzuki...er...Honda...er....Harley Davidson....er...wait......move to Vincent. That's it. Buy a Vincent. They never made scooters. Ducati began its foray into internal combustion as a company that built engines to stick on bicycle frames ferchrysakes! How much lower can a company go and still be in "motorcycling"?

Sexy motorcycles made Ducati's reputation. I doubt they plan to stop making them anytime soon. Sheesh!

The point is Ducati has ALREADY sold scooters. If you hate the idea you must hate Ducati.

As to .........I haven't turned ......, yet. So far just sarcastic. ...... is a few steps further down the road.

Jeez, you antiscooterite. ;) You should really try riding one, it is an entirely different kind of fun, but still fun. Go ahead and get in touch with your inner lesbian.

Lol... I do consider myself a male lesbian... I love women...:p

You know you're jealous Steve.

Bikes 2 and 3 maybe...:D I need to clarify.. I do not have an issue with scooters per se....I just think there would be a dilution of the boutique branding of Ducati should they make one... This is just my opinion... Make it a VW brand even if Ducati actually produce it...

Yeah, maybe, hard to say. I don't think aprilia scooters reduce the exotic motorcycle brand. You're talking about a company who puts it's name on friggin underwear and shoelaces. But I doubt you'll have to worry, they tried making one but it was too hot to ride.

At least if they made one we wouldn't have to worry about slippery foot pegs on it....

I agree. If Ducati ended up moving forward with manufacturing a scooter it would most likely be a hot conversational topic upon its release and then slide into the background. Scooters are designed to satisfy a different set of needs/wants; most people wouldn't give them a second thought unless they were of course shopping for one. Many major motorcycle manufacturers offer a vehicle of the scooter variety and, as far as I am aware, have not received flack for doing so. I do understand the desire to protect the Ducati name, but it would take much more than offering a scooter model to accomplish this. However, as Denver Rick alluded to, a good start to preserving the Ducati name would be to eliminate the Ducati branded frills and fluff products that are already out there.
