Just came back form a track day and cleaning the bike I noticed the right cover is lose (std exhaust).

Any idea how to fix it? I don't see threaded holes or missing bolts anywhere.

Thanks a lot

hmmm, might have to open up the exhaust to re tighten it...does it rattle around or is it possibly bent...

Same issue except it is my left one. Was cleaning the chain and noticed it. Looked all over to see where to tighten but could not see. Have a feeling this is another "trend" others have dealt with.

The bolt is missing. Same thing happened to mine. The exhaust has to come off unfortunately to get at it.

There's bolts under the engine/top of the exhaust that get loose. It's possible to tighten, but I couldn't tighten down enough to stop them from rattling. Ducati New Orleans swapped my exhaust out with a brand spankin' new one. No rattle since.

Ducati Austin said that a new exhaust wouldn't have been needed, so maybe they know a trick or just haven't seen what the hell happened with mine (which was so bad that insulation was coming out of the side). All happened around 14,000 miles.

Reviving this old post

2013 Panigale 1199 base here.... 4,300 miles and have the same issue.

Anybody was able to fix this without having to remove the entire exhaust? I'm kinda concerned that at some point the other bolt that's holding it in place might get lost and the whole freaking cover falls off the bike while riding :-/

I noticed my left side cover was loose towards the front of the bike so i put a little thick washer in between the cover and the exhaust and it got tight, but now the rear of the cover is loose

My dealers top mechanic tightened mine once, before I ended up removing them and safety wiring these bolts.

Pm me your email address and I can send you the exhaust removal and reinstall instructions.

It was a warranty fix for me. They replaced the whole damn thing. Not that it made a difference as supposedly the new part was designed to fix this issue, but a few months and a few thousand miles later and the replaced one is rattling away. I'm saving my pennies for an Akro and not worry about it again.

Interesting! Thanks for the comments....

I guess this bike vibrates so much that the bolts get loose if they don't have a lot of loctite or something :-/

Loctite won't help because it's very high temperature. Also, the bolt squishes 2 aluminum pieces, which are of less strength. They soften up and the bolts come loose. During that, the 2 holes to the sleeve become enlarged due to the movement.

So in a few words it will happen eventually regardless! I guess it a good excuse to upgrade the exhaust [emoji16]

The reason is a faulty design: The inner part of the exhaust cans have some kind of overlaying treads bushes for the brackets which are pressed into the soft aluminum covers resulting in reduced pre tension/loose bolts/destroyed covers.

I did a modification to the exhaust which worked: Leveling out the tread bushes with some washers, putting some smaller washers into the increased holes of the aluminum covers and then tightening the bolts with 25 Nm.

For better understanding see images. This solutions increases the seating and is taking away too much pressure from the aluminum covers so no more loosening will occur.

Very nice! I wish I had the time/garage/space to do it. Thanks for the write up. I'll come up with something for sure! Ducati should do a recall on those! I'm nervous the cover will fall and get caught in my chain and make me loose control or something!

After my last track day I ended up having the same problem with my left cover. From what I read in this tread, it looks like there is no easy solution to this except taking apart the whole exhaust system and tightening/safety wiring the bolts. Unfortunately I can't get an Akra in Switzerland, since it's not street legal :(

Phl, would be great if you could send me the instructions as well. I sent you a PM.

The
Newer 899 cans come with modified sleeves and different washers. Seems to work better now

Jogy's solution seems to be pretty clever. Unfortunately this won't work with the Ilmberger ceramic sleeves.

I do not have the side covers installed (except the SL). I don't like them (the engine is simply too beautiful) and my suspicion is that Ducati introduced them only to hide leaking valve cover gaskets :)
Also some racers here like Styler mentioned that they want to see the cylinder head just to know if something goes wrong.

On my Tricolore the 2012 OEM exhaust loop cover is fixed with 3 screws: I replaced them with special bolts that are safety wired and contain a steel springs to keep the shield flexible in position. Works perfect since more than 2 years.

On the CF Pani I have the Full Ti Akra system, completely different heat shield design: It's mounted with 4 M8(!) screws to the subframe instead the exhaust (makes much more sense to me).

On the SL, heat shield is also mounted to the CF subframe with two terribly weird steel studs, need to replace them with Ti. I kept the side covers on the SL, they are really nice and mounted in a completely different and rock solid way.
