Salvage 1299 Superleggera

So I got more information, some of the carbon parts were damaged and repaired by thecarbondr. I spoke with him in length today and he explained all the work he did on the bike. There were scratches on the swingarm, subframe, exhaust, and some other bits. Everything was inspected and it was all cosmetic and repaired. This gives me a bit more confidence in the bike.

That being said, after the discussion here and thinking about it more, I think the price is still too high.

I’m sure it’s fine and if the price is right should be a blast as that platform is legit. Personally, I won’t ride on structural composites that have been compromised and repaired unless it was done by the Mfg in this case Riba Composites. Also it will always have a salvage title so I would buy it, and keep it.

Just to confirm, no structural components we’re compromised. It was purely cosmetic.

Regardless, I have decided to pass. Thinking I just save a little longer and go D16RR at this point.

Paul “experting” like Steven. lol

“Step 2 – Inspect the damage to determine its actual size. Carbon fiber is a brittle material. While it may be crushed in, it will not bend and stay bent like metals. The actual damaged area, including cracks in the resin, delaminations between layers, etc., often extends well beyond the visible damage. The extent of the “hidden damage” is very important to know and will determine the size of the eventual repair…. Note: other methods of non-destructive inspection utilizing ultrasonic phased array, thermography or other techniques may be required for determining damage in thicker laminates or for larger, more complex damage repairs not covered in this article.”

Ive worked a lot with carbon and epoxy composites in general, I know what I am talking about. I said if there was NO visible signs of damage it will most likely be ok. Also get the context here: the bike fell over, it wasn't dropped from a 3 storey building.

Agreed. My comments regarding composites (not my specialty by any means) was, it’s often hard to tell. I attended an owners class for MT Propellers where they went into detail of when a prop gets dinged, what is the next course of action. I saw prop examples with fairly identical surface inclusions. One blade is fixed, one blade is tossed. I personally wouldn’t be comfortable making that call. So when I hear the swing arm was scratched and repaired at least from my experience at MT, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable especially if I didn’t have the before photos. MTs recommendation is if in doubt, pull the blade and send it in. If the swing arm was repaired and signed off at RIBA, I would have no issues. The carbon dr, not so sure

If I owned a Superlegerra, and damaged it, I'd probably live with the repair, as I would fully know the ins and outs.

And I'd race it until I destroyed it in a 150mph crash. Then hope the engine is OK, and fit it in a base model chassis, and race it until it detonated itself. And then throw it in the bin and write it off as a life experience.

Just my view though.

I know what I am talking about…

You and Steven have the same issue - you seem to not understand that asserting a thing does not make it true.

Also, it has been my experience that people who actually know what they’re talking about rarely need to tell other people they know what they’re talking about.

How do you know for certain what happened to the bike?

If it involves an accident there was likely a police report. The insurance company which paid out the claim would know the jurisdiction and report number.

Whatever, I bet youve never made anything out of composites in your entire life or interact with people who build advanced carbon structures as their day job. Youve just got a problem with me, dont let that get in the way of your google expertise.

From the guy who’s repeatedly argued medical and military facts despite having no experience with either. Do you think before you type? Lmao

I probably know nothing about composites lol. So basically what it comes down to is if your riding the bike to Starbucks and back probably never have a problem. If the bike was crashed, had structural cracks but not showing on surface pushing the bike say on the track it could let go any moment. Seen this with carbon wheels and swingarms before so unfortunately that's composite parts they are disposable and will always get replaced if crashed regardless what they look like.

Exactly. And neither the OP nor Paul (lol) know if the seller’s story is truthful, or if there’s more extensive damage to the carbon parts without structural analysis.

Just an FYI to everyone here. I verified the story with three sources. Guy backed into it with his truck, let’s not go full Qanon with this.

You’re injecting sociopolitics into the circumstance for emotional impact. It’s an emotional issue for you - you want the bike. I don’t. For me, it’s a pragmatic issue - not an emotional one. Is there video of the incident? Is there structural analysis of the damage? If not, the incident and the damage are ambiguous. Those are the only objective issues here. Aside from that, spend your money however you want. :)

Lol I’m not buying it

I like the way Rick thinks
