My barends look exactly like that and I have to buy the tool that fits, soooo.... Not to beat a dead horse here, is it a 12mm hex or a f---ing 14mm torx?

No one got this right.
Yes a 12mm Hex will work but it is not the right tool for the job.
It's kind of similar to a close fitting metric or imperial bit that gets the job done but you know it's not the right size...
We all know that a Hex has 6 sides.
A Torx has 6 points and is similar in shape to a star.
A Spline is similar to a Torx but has 12 points.... This is the bolt on our bar ends.
So for the record, a 12mm Hex will work but the right tool is a 12mm Spline.

yeah but since this is the only spline fitting I've encountered on any of my 20 bikes over the years, suppose I'll just stick with the the 12mm hex. It seems really odd for ducati to use such an obscure fitting.
