Today I was at Ducati Austin, and was back in the service area. Was talking to the tech about ways to cool my bike down. I have an 1199S. He mentioned an upgrade for the fan that pulls through the lower radiator. They had a SPAL fan in the box on the bench, he was about to attach it to the lower radiator.

It was in a red box, and I estimate about 5 inches across, roughly. I should’ve gotten the part number but I was rushing out. Can anybody provide information regarding the correct SPAL fan for our motorcycles? I remember the tech mentioning that it was specified for an Aprilia, for what that’s worth.

The tech said that it can lower the rad. temperature substantially better than the stock fan.

It’s obviously got to be a puller not a pusher because it’s mounted in back of the radiator. I see several on the Internet, and would like to tackle the install myself, rather than pay full price plus labor at the dealership.

Any info appreciated!

I have all of them up to 8" that i was playing with when I did my new radiator. The smallest is a 4". I'm currently working with two of those on the upper core for a project. I settled on the 5.5" for the lower part # V31-A 101-46A. Works great. Its listed at 5.5" but its closer to 6". The stock fan is 5". Next size up is 7" which would work but was a tad heavy and and not really needed.

Super helpful stuff endodoc-I really appreciate it!

So it just screws into the back of the lower radiator? How exactly do you attach it? And I assume you’ve got to splice in the power lead plug from the OEM fan to clip to the bike-side harness?

So on the current setup I made a carbon/Ti fan bracket. The fan bolts to the bracket and the bracket bolts to the lower radiator bracket and a standoff that is by the spark plug. I had to make all the pieces. On the new one the new build which uses the little 4" fans I had threaded standoff's welded to the radiator. I was going to do that on the current setup but the mounting points for a fan bracket were handy and its easy to remove. Yes you would put a compatible connector on the SPAL to match the harness. Cycleterminal.com has them

Ok thanks endodoc- sounds complicated! You wouldn’t be interested in making another lower bracket for 5.5” fan would u? I’d pay you for your troubles! And you said other mounting points were necessary as well? To be welded? That’s above my pay grade.

I searched that fan number you listed and it shows 5.2”— does that sound right?

Ok TY— I’ll message you soon for more details. Gonna go ahead and buy that fan. In your opinion it’s a step up from the OEM one?

My radiator is not stock so I could not duplicate what I have. I use an all water 1pc from H2O. Mick makes a fan plate for your application using the same size stock SPAL. Im sure he could make it for a larger fan. His zip ties to the radiator I believe. Better than OEM, uh could not say. My cooling system is completely different and I just needed a fan solution so I used whatever fit best for my application. Honestly you would have to look at the CFM data on the SPAL site to get a glimpse of that answer. My radiator actually works too well. I have to block off the upper core most of the time unless its 90+.

Yes I see you’ve got some insane super radiator porn going on there! [emoji2]

I forgot to mention I do have a stock-size race radiator new in box- waiting to install. I’ll reach out to Mick re: a bracket for my application. The Ducati tech today said the SPAL solution is much better than OEM.

I’ve also got Evotech covers for upper and lower that will be going on.

I visited cycleterminal- cool site. You don’t happen to have the part number for the plug adapter u used, do u? If not I’ll just inquire there.

Thank u for all the great info-

Here is the shroudless fan setup with Spal 5.2" fan.

Cycle Terminal has most the oem connectors and what he doesn't have can be resourced from Mouser. If you need quality wiring to build harnesses Mill Spec is the place.

Thanks Mick-do you fabricate and sell that bracket? I’ll need one— as I just ordered the 5.2” SPAL fan.

Regarding the power connector— I’m gathering that an adapter can be had to go between the new fan and the factory plug?

Yes I make the bracket and normally sell the kit complete plug n play. The Spal fan does not come with a connector but can get from Cycle Terminal. Another thing you can do if you get a fan it can easily be zip tied directly to the radiator so just hollor if you need anything.

Mick’s stuff is pimp as f@$k, if you have money get it. I don’t have that kind of money but I am mechanic with access to all kinds of metals so I made my own! I do use stock radiator and spal fan.
