Speed & Gear indication drop off and check engine light

2023 Panigale V4S At highway speeds, the speed and gear indications change to --------- along with a check engine light.
Arrive at destination and turn the bike off, attempt to restart and I have a dead battery. I put it on the tender overnight and everything was back to normal. CEL eventually went out. I began keeping it on the tender, however this scenario began to repeat itself. Several occasions, the bike wouldn't start in neutral. Movement of the kickstand would cause speed and gear indications to appear and disappear. I would put it in 1st and pull the clutch in to start it. Ordered a new battery and everything was normal for about 2 rides.

Today while in neutral with the bike running, this repeated. Randomly lost indications and CEL illuminated. Indications immediately came back and was normal after. CEL remains on. The exception is that the battery isn't dead this time.

Anyone seen anything similar? I may order the OBD Star reader soon. Thoughts?

Isn't it still under warranty? Take it to the dealer.

Are there any aftermarket electronic parts on it or is it totally stock?

It's under warranty. I'm about 3.5 hrs away from my dealership and was trying to self diagnose on my own before throwing in the towel and doing that. NRC fender eliminator, Upmap flash is all that's been done.

Could be the gear position sensor, I had that happen once on my 2020 MY, but I thought it had been resolved with recalls/updates.

This along the with the kickstand sensor has crossed my mind. I feel like the GPS would be more logical.

I can't remember. There are permanent codes, and ones that will reset after 4 (or so) successful key on with no further error.

Don't reset it though. When the error is still active, take it to the dealer. Ducati and just about every dealership mechanic are parts swappers. If they see an error code, they'll shotgun that part for a quick fix.

P0916 Gear shift position circuit low.

Had this on my V4r. The gear position sensor was damaged by heat. There is an upgraded switch that can be fitted that is more tolerant of the heat. The switch needs to be fitted by a Ducati dealer although I have been told OBDStar has the capability of programming the switch correctly.

It isn’t programmed per se, but rather you use the OBDstar to start the re-learn process, which is kind of a misnomer. IIRC, after starting the procedure you’ll get a flashing “- -“ on the dash where the gear is displayed. Then you shift into first and pull the clutch lever in. You then work up to 6th and back to 1st pulling the clutch lever each time. It’s more or less a verification procedure and not entirely necessary.

Thanks for this. The check engine light has extinguished. It is occasionally having an issue with indicating N. Every 3-5 rides or so it may show itself. I do have the OBDStar. Is your R a 2023?

Sorry yes. When I said programming I meant learning

You may not have to do it at all. If you were to install a new gear position indicator and it works, then it works and fussing with it further isn’t needed.

If I were the OP though, I’d have the dealer replace it under warranty.

My issue is that it cost me more in money and time to get to the dealer than the part costs.

The gear indication is there so the ECU knows what map to run. That be the reason it needs it to run. The computer's clear one fault per key on.

Recent additional info on this, it's only having an issue indicating Neutral intermittently. I sometimes have to crank the bike in 1st and then later N is indicated with no problem.
