Sprocket carrier question

If I'm going to take off the sprocket carrier to put on a different one does a rear stand need to be used?
It looks like the steps are
Loosen sprocket carrier bolts
Remove 55mm axle nut
Remove carrier and replace

So if this is accurate does the tire need to be off the ground?
I dont think so but wanted to check first

Does not need to be off the ground

Remove axle nut
Remove lower chain guard
Loosen swingarm pinch bolts
Loosen chain by moving eccentric hub forward
Remove sprocket assembly
Swap

Nope it does not, but make sure to reinstall the spacers. the thin one goes between the big nut and the thicker one goes between the flange and the bearing in the hub.

Thanks. Why do the pinch bolts need to be loosened?

It will allow you to move/ rotate the eccentric hub to loosen the chain enough to slip it off the sprocket. You will then be able to take the sprocket off of the axle. Do you have the tool to rotate the axle?

I'm not taking the sprocket off so there shouldn't be a reason to loosen the chain

It seems you wish to replace the hub flange, not the sprocket carrier (OEM is a 1 piece sprocket and carrier) as you stated.

Regardless, you cannot remove/replace anything regarding the OEM sprocket carrier assembly, other than the axle nut, without first removing the chain. The cush drives will spin on you if not restricted from the rear. No access without removing the assembly first.

If this is confusing for you, you are much better off having a professional do the work. You will need an eccentric hub spanner, torque wrenches, and various sockets. A vice with soft jaws will also make the job easier.

What is the tool needed for the back of the cush drives? Allen head?

12mm allen

If you buy a 12mm Allen Bit like this, you can grind it down and it'll fit behind the sprocket (12 O'clock position) to hold the cush rubbers while you undo the nuts
