Okay, I hit up google, but I can't find anything state specific.

I'm buying (bought) an R thats in Virginia, I live in New Jersey. Guys has lien free title in hand that I will get with the bike on Saturday when I take a train down to D.C. Obviously I'll have the R's vin insured so thats not a problem.

License/temp plates since this is a personal sale.
The out of state VA title will come home with me to my local NJ DMV where I'll get permanent resident registration, as well as plates. But down can I legally ride home with the bike as I plan to? Do I go to the Alexandria, VA DMV and get a non-resident tag there or what?

This is such a simple issue I'm sure many of you know the answer, its just this is my first experience ever buying a vehicle out of state, and I don't want to put my S plate on and ride home from NJ. Not feeling the Virginia State Police pulling me over and sticking it to me.

Thanks in advance

Where are you buying this bike from in Virginia ......?

Fairfax, Gunny.
I'm tentatively planning on arriving at Union Station around 9am, the guy is picking me up, doing the deal, then speeding home 220 miles away.

Every state has different inspection policies, just call your local DMV and find out what it takes to register it (and get it insured before you depart).

Enjoy your R, you ........ And congrats!

And check the bolts before you leave!:D

You don't want anything to fall of the R on the way home and begin your new ownership where you left off with the previous one.

Make sure you remove and re torque all the bolts as soon as you get back. Maybe even some random locktite on them.

I bought a new bike out of state and found that there was no way to get any sort of tag. I road home through four states with no issues. I had the manufacturers statement of origin, bill of sale, and insurance.

Thats what I'm gonna end up doing. Virginia offers permits, but you have to be a VA resident. Did you throw an old tag on the bike or ride tagless? I guess that was my main question here.

Thanks

I would just do what jjsC6 said and have all the paperwork with you and just ride it home and don't sweat it. When I bought mine from the dealer here they don't have temp plates for me since I purchased out of state in OR and I live in WA. I just carried all the paperwork for the sale with me and rode until my plate showed up with no issues.

live in KS, bought my bike from ducati omaha, rode it halfway home starting in MO. they provides a temp NE tag so I could operate the bike on the road legally from day 1. ymmv

I had no tag on it. Passed a few cops and nobody looked twice.
