swing arm rubbing

Same issue on my R just wondering do you have the swingarm set to P.

I initially thought it was a slack chain but that's not the case also being driven in wet mode should make zero difference as that does not affect the suspension or chain.

Also riding style should have zero impact unless you are stunting which is not the case here

I'm at a loss

I'm pretty sure it is in F, I'll double check tomorrow when I pick it up.
I'll keep you posted on how this plays out.

Hello

I had the same problem and got a new chain under warranty. Now since 1200km (800mls) no marks on the swing arm. My chain was lengthened (or how this is called, sorry...) unevenly. If you were turning the wheel then on some parts the chain was okay, then it was super tight and then in other parts it was normal.

I'm picking up my bike this morning and plan on giving the dealer a ration of .... for letting the DNA guy pull that crap.

Thank you for your input Richard. Your chain had to be defective since it was stretched in various places. Don't apologize for your language skills since I would like to see how people on this forum would do posting in your native language :D

I did and it was quite different from what he told the service writer:

Dear Mr. Hauer,

Thank you for contacting Ducati.

Per your request we reached out to the Service Area Manager for feedback on the findings of his inspection. Here is his response. "The chain, when inspected, had approximately 20mm too much deflection allowing it to contact the swing-arm (even static). Once it was properly adjusted, it was not possible for it to come within 2-3mm of the swing-arm. Loose chain."

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us or an Authorized Ducati Dealership. zaster -

just had my swing arm replaced again under warranty - with-in 200 miles it was rubbing again; now get to ride another 100 miles to the dealership to have them take pictures for the 3rd time!

if you haven't already - have you contacted the NHTSA from the 1199r owner's manual?

i don't care what riding style someone has - the chain should never come in contact with the swingarm as it presents a safety issue if the chain creates to much friction - imagine what would happen to someone if the chain comes off at 65 mph (state speed limit in NY). it's a hard piece of metal 4 feet long and coming off in a straight-line or as shrapnel - it's a danger.

I think you are being a bit dramatic here, it's not like the chain is cutting into the swingarm it's just rubbing some paint off due to slack on a new chain which can be rectified very simply and no need to replace an entire swingarm.

I had this issue and basically there was 53ish mm of slack as opposed to 47-49mm, a quick tightening of the chain and the issue was resolved.

Not quite. :(
I just got back from my dealership since I thought (and many knowledgeable folks told me as well) that my chain was adjusted to tight by the DNA idiot and it was....less than 40mm
They set it to 47 mm and now it will rub on the swing arm again.
I'm really pissed since having the chain that tight affected the suspension, chain and sprocket wear and could snap the chain if I was to hit a serious bump etc.

Hello
I got now about 2500km more on the new chain and it rubbed again, well only really little marks but it rubbed (saw the marks after riding flatout on the German Autobahn a few times). Bike goes into the yearly inspection in about a month, then my really good dealership will take again pictures and send it to Ducati Italy. I told them already that I do not want to change the swing arm, the whole assembly has to stay like it came from factory, so Ducati should offer me something like warranty extension or whatever. I will refuse a new swingarm as the marks are only a optical problem (but touched that up in my company so no problem here) and why exchange the swing arm before they 100% know what cause the problem? :D

The chain was and is correct, the space between the chain and swing arm is just a bit too tight and as the chain moves a little with high rpm... Ouch :)

Ok - just got the final info from the dealer

The rear swing arm was out of spec - causing the chain to rub.

They ordered the new swing arm under warranty and got it installed yesterday and I was supposed to take delivery today.

After driving the 110 miles to the dealership to pick up my 1199r i was told that the DES error came back and that it was the actual Ohlins unit for the rear that is not working correctly and they are tracking down a new part for that; supposedly only one left in the U.S. that was to be overnighted to them.

In addition; plus i noticed some paint defects today on the tail; looks like some a small bubble on the side
-and it looks like the left side carbon heel guard also has a white piece where it looks like the matte covering didn't take to the carbon.
-I'll wait to address that for when i pick up my bike at this point.... at this point with this much trouble, might as well have the bike perfect...

1199r owner now for 2.5 weeks, of which 2 weeks the bike has been at the dealership...

sory to hear that.. hope there will be no more problems after.... gl...

My most recent communication to DNA about this issue:

"I was questioning the tension of my chain since it was inspected and supposedly properly tightened with a DNA tech present.
While the chain was truly lose upon his inspection, he had the Ducati tech over tighten it.
When I had it re-inspected by the dealership today the deflection measured less than 40mm not the 47 - 49mm
recommended measurement.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you about the perils of an over-tightened chain.
While it did not touch the swing arm at the 40 mm setting it does at the lowest recommended setting
of 47 mm.
The dealership took a video of the before and after and will be submitting it to you.
Since I have been dealing with this issue since May of this year, I would appreciate a speedy resolution."

I'll keep you posted in case I get a response: rolleyes:

Time out.

Has anyone actually had any damage from the chain rubbing on the swingarm?

Or is it just a harmless loss of paint? Is it digging in? This isn't the first bike I've seen do this. But I've never seen real damage on a maintained bike.
