Hey guys,

Would you say that the 1199 is an evolution of the 916 series? I do see the resemblance of the 1098 with the 998 (dual Headlights, dual taillights, under tail exhaust etc.) sorta like the 1098 being a smoothed out 998. I believe the 1098 picked up where the 998 left off with the 999 interrupting the evolution. Do you think the 1199 is a continuation of that series or is it something like the 999 which departs from previous looks?

Fire away!

Personally I think it is a departute from everything just as the 916 was to all previous bikes. The 916 was the most inspiring bike of its times and a major departure from the previous bikes and not just in the looks category. The Panigale is the same - Engine design, frameless design, Exhaust design, Electonics. This is the biggest evolution since the 916.

Many say it is the biggest evolution since the 851... I do think the panigale sets the bar and rewrites the rules in the book of superbikes. Everything about it speaks brute force.

I've read a few threads and articles on the evolution vs revolution of the 1199 Panigale. Personally, on the outside I think it's evolution. You can definitely see the progression from 916 to 1098 to 1199. But underneath its all revolution. Frame (or lack there of), engine design, electronics, dash, etc.

The 1199 is a revolution.

The 916 is actually an evolution of the 1980 Pantah 500 which introduced the trellis frame. This frame then got the liquid cooled desmoquattro engine in the 851 in 1987 and was iterated to the 888 before iterating to the 916 in 1994. The 1198 was the last of the trellis framed desmoquattro (yeah, I know the testaretta engine, but this is really an evolution of the desmoquattro) bikes.

Evolution is change to meet a need. The Panigale is more of a revolution. There is some resemblence to the superbikes of past but really it is a whole new species.

Lets call it DucatiSuperbus
