The EGT exiting the stock mufflers really hurts when your riding in shorts and sandles and have to put your foot down at a stop light it's perfectly in line to roast your ankle. I think this is a by product of the cat. convrt. It would be interesting to compare to a Termi equipped 1199 and see what the difference is.

your riding in shorts and sandles

your riding in shorts and sandles

your riding in shorts and sandles

Problem solved.

Shorts are acceptable when its only a quick trip to StarBucks....Right?

I find it easy to ignore the ankle roasting when I forgo the shorts altogether and just ride in my briefs. My a$$ gets so hot, I forget about what is going on below my knees...

I also found knee dragging in shorts in really painful.

Come on Ducati what's your problem.

I took some heat from VAST when I met him in the city with a tshirt in the HEAT I can't imagine shorts and Sandles looool.... t shirt is dangerous and I would take the risk occasionally but shorts not in a million years let alone Sandles yuk I can only imagine the road rash

I try to ride buck naked as often as possible, but I always have to put my damn socks back on for that same reason.

I don't get it... This is a valid concern... Here is me in a photo with my riding gear:

How irresponsible! I ALWAYS wear my visor down... even if I am sporting my CK huggers and havaianas.

Thanks Dads, but I already have one. Back to the OP. Sounds reasonable, I bet you're right that a fully lit cat makes the EGT much higher.

Back to the "controversy". I'm sure you're always wearing Kevlar-lined, armored up riding jeans at the minimum right? You've seen various tests out there that show that regular jeans shred upon impact with the road with body weight in them, providing next to no abrasion resistance.

If I'm going on even a slightly serious ride, I'm armored up, usually a two-piece Dainese suit. For little errands in 107 heat-index heat in FL, sure I'll wear shorts and a T-shirt but always helmet and gloves and a Boblebe-e CE Level 2-certified backpack. Compared to the ridiculous no-helmet riders surrounding us here, I actually feel responsible.

My favorite squid variation is the slammed/stretched sportbike rider that actually wears an armored jacket but no helmet, sometimes shorts. Now that is the ultimate in cool.

All joking aside, I never ride without gear (boots, leather jacket, FF helmet, gloves)... no matter how hot it gets here. I do need to get better armored jeans. That is the only piece of gear that I am lacking. There is a great feeling of riding without gear, a feeling of freedom and comfort, but the risk, to me at least, is not worth it. The older I get, the longer I want to hold to dear life. :)

Now that I am going to add a sport bike again to the stable, I will have to get a new pair of riding boots. The one that I have are great, but styled for cruisers. Looking at some of the threads on boots to get an idea of what to buy that would be comfortable to walk with and protect me while riding.

As to leather trousers/pants, I have never been able to do that... just can't... reason to look for jeans that would provide the protection without that leather look.

I rode in tennis shoes (DCs) the other day instead of my normal Alpinestars boots, just to go somewhere and walk around afterwards and not feel like a power ranger... I felt naked. I still had jeans/gloves/jacket/helmet but it was just odd. I've moved my 899 around in the driveway when it's still warm and almost burned my leg on the engine casing, I don't know how people ride in shorts!

Actually, neither the Squid nor the Pro has good body position there :D

Not going into the gear wearing argument, as it's too old to be interesting to be argued.

Having survived the last 48 years of my life as a motorcyclist both racing and riding, pavement, and dirt, with and without a helmet, with or without "proper" gear, it's discretionary when I go out for a "ride" I'm geared up, if I'm going to run an errand and I happen to be in shorts and sandles so be it, and because I live in the land of the safety NAZI's I have to wear a helmet, another freedom of choice removed.
But my biggest concern is the elevated exhaust temp, I was wondering if any of you have done a before and after temp check, cat no cat?

Lots of opinions here, unless it's a family member or someone you really care for, who gives a .... if someone wants to ride around naked with his hair on fire?

I live in a minimally congested area and can ride around on a Sunday wearing a helmet, shorts, and tennis shoes on either my 899 or Monster and not have to worry about other drivers being within 30 feet of me.

However, there are idiots that weave in and out of Dallas rush hour traffic wearing the same that help drive my insurance rates up. I think by being sensible, one can gauge what they wear while riding their bike for themselves. However, when my coverage goes up because some moron doesn't mind being a statistic, then I DO start to give a .....

I'm a firm believer in Darwin's theory of natural selection and thinning out the gene pool. Ride however well dressed you like. In fact, burning up the family jewels will help what would otherwise be future potential award winners.
