Have you considered the Diavel? I am in the process of mounting hard bags (MTS 1200) and turning it into a full long-distance touring bike. For my purpose, it's the perfect compromise. I have the '12 and I hear the new one is even better. Plus you won't be qualified with any expletives on forums. Just saying.

I was thinking about getting this bike for exactly the reasons you mentioned . As my kids get older if they want to ride on the bike i think they will feel safer and more comfortable .
I have no intention on getting rid of the panigale as i may get back into racing again at some stage . I also have a ktm 1290 super duke for a weekend fang and a few ducati bevels as well.
There is no way i would turn up for a ride with my mates on a harley . I really like the ones with the hard bags "baggers" i think they look really cool.i have owned a few multistrada's already and most likely would not buy another . I would never want to own a diaval .
