Hi all.
2012 diavel with little over 10k miles. Absolutely nursed with love and wants for nothing. I service myself and am compident with what I'm at. Belts changed around 3 to 4k miles ago. And no issues with bike except a dud front cylinder plug that caused an intermittent misfire.
So today being maybe the first time to get a half decent spin as the weather has been rotten. I started bike and warmed her up before setting off. 50 miles or so later in for a coffee as it's getting cold. Back on bike and off down the motorway and 85 90mph and a distant rattle is heard nothing that has been before and definitely doesnt belong. And before anyone says how rattley dukes are this is far from normal. I set a real slow pace home as I havent got a chance on the motorway. Home and drop the sump nut. Small bits of metal on magnet but larger than expected then pull filter cage and I see this.......I no it's not good but I'm asking were should I start looking. I'm guessing it's an engine out job but does this look like terminal ..... What u see in the pic there us more if u put your finger in to the oil basket hole. HELP PLEASE......

dayum. even my performance oil drain plug would probably not have been able to catch all those particles.

It's a sickener. Had no choose but ride home slowly. It didnt seize on me and ran fine but a killer clanking..

I know you know this already but don't start the engine again. Put it back together (screen) without cleaning. Call your dealer for an appointment. Bring the used oil in a sealed container along with your bike to your dealer if he requests it.' Tell him exactly where the rattle is coming from, left side, right side, gear case, or valve train front or rear piston. Be specific. Most of all don't panic. Sorry this happened.

Suspect rod/crank bearing failure; just my guess after seeing one or two. That appears to be copper - which is why it's not attached to the magnet of the drain plug. Ugly baby though that's for sure....sorry dude.

These are my thoughts aswell.
Sick sick sick...wouldn't mind if it was abused but this thing is kept MINT.

So far I can feel massive play in the road connected to the vertical cylinder and a small amount on the horizontal. I got a bad feeling for the crank....

Ok chaps just an update on what happened and maybe a small bit of info that may be worth taking note of..I completely stripped the engine down and split the cases apart. (Nearly had a heart attack when all the gear box components fell apart.) The damage was the vertical rod bearings. And in the small amount of time I rode the bike it took off 10 thou from the crank pin!!!. Found a source to carry out work on the crank and rod bearings in the UK. I had the crank dynamically balanced at the same time...All sent back in great shape. So the rebuild began. 2 things were very apparent. 1 the head gaskets didnt look in great shape at all, so I'm wondering if this was the damage that ducati expected with the blue coolant and why they switched to the pink stuff.so new head gaskets were ordered and fitted... And 2 the oil cooler seemed to be very reluctant to be cleared out with degreaser after the oil had been drained. I only got a cap full of degreaser into the cooler and with high pressure air I kept cleaning backwards and forwards. After a few days of continuous washing out with degreaser I was easily managing to get 5 or 6 erasol cap loads into the cooler. And the fluid gushed out both directions I'm raging now that I didnt place a rag over the pipes to see if debris was coming out. I pulled the oil pump apart and checked the internal surfaces for scoring allowing for oil pressure to be off but all good. I cleaned out every oil gallery that I could see. So engine all rebuilt and hand cranked over to allow oil to be distributed around engine. Then hit the starter button.she fired up first time, just fitted new chain today as couldn't get the correct size link pin diameter anywere. And went for a short steady ride this evening..ALL good so far. Bike home, washed and put back into garage......phew.....
