To plug or not to plug

A nail can separate the belts, and lead to the tire ripping apart (On auto tires). I haven't personally seen this, but have heard its a possibility, especially at high speeds. That being said, I replaced my tire when I got a nail, it would probably try a patch now.

Its in the center so I'd get it repaired.

i think your wrong on that, IMHO if you use a good plug and some rubber cement, as long as the head isn't big, i believe you'd be fine for some miles. think about these tires heat up quick you dont think the plug melts into the tire leaving the area coated?

It's funny this topic is brought up because I just caught a nail a week ago. Good thing is it a as directly in the tread and I was worried but I got it patched up and it's holding up fine. My bike has 255 miles on it brand new don't wanna buy a new tire already

had the same thing happening to me with 250 miles on the new bike.

still have the tire in the garage, already patched it, never put it on (yet). will give it a try soon...

see the nail right next to the chain?

phil i feel your pain, do you not trust the patch or are you more concerned for track days to have tire issues. street use would be ok as long as you dont have huge roof nail head.

A good topic would be what happens when tire pops while riding, on the street during easy riding and on the track when riding 7/10ths or more. From what I know it is usually manageable on the street as long as tire hangs on and not fall apart. Belts on tires corrode if exposed. I do have a plug kit in in the boot but just as a backup to get the bike to the dealer. If tire gets nailed when new or with plenty of life left, I probably would be comfortable streeting the plugged tire but no canyon carving until tire is changed. That's just me.
